The hallway buzzed with the usual morning chaos. Kiara leaned against her locker, arms crossed, glancing sideways at Piper, who was talking animatedly with Talia. Every now and then, Piper's voice would get just a little louder, her words somehow finding their way to Kiara's ears. Annoying. She'd barely had her coffee, and already, Piper was going at it.

"Hey, stranger." Jasmine's voice cut through Kiara's irritation like a cool breeze. She sidled up beside her, eyes sparkling with mischief. "You look ready to kill someone."

"You're half-right," Kiara muttered, shooting a glare in Piper's direction. "One guess who."

Jasmine stifled a laugh, but her attention drifted toward Talia, who was currently leaning against Piper's locker. Talia caught Jasmine's eye and winked, a grin spreading on her face. Jasmine's cheeks warmed, and she waved, mouthing something that made Talia's smile widen.

Kiara rolled her eyes. "You're hopeless."

"You're right, I am hopelessly distracted by a gorgeous girl who happens to be standing right over there," Jasmine replied, nudging Kiara with her elbow. "Unlike you, who's hopelessly obsessed with a girl you can't stand."

Kiara's eyes narrowed. "I'm not obsessed with her, Jas. She just... has a way of getting on my last nerve."

"Uh-huh," Jasmine said, smirking. "Keep telling yourself that."

Just then, Piper broke away from Talia and strode directly toward them. Talia followed, giving Jasmine a little wave as she came up to stand beside Piper, who was looking at Kiara with her usual mix of mild disdain and hidden curiosity.

"Morning, Kiara," Piper said, the corners of her mouth twitching. "Managed to make it here without tripping over your own ego?"

Kiara bristled, lifting her chin. "I see you've decided to bring yours along as backup."

Talia rolled her eyes and threw her hands up, half-laughing. "Could you two try to act civil for just one day?"

Jasmine slipped her arm around Kiara's shoulders, pulling her closer with a smirk. "Leave them be. Bickering is their love language."

Kiara sputtered, feeling her cheeks heat up, and saw Piper's face flush at the same time. "This is not—she's—no!"

Piper quickly glanced away, looking anywhere but at Kiara. "Like I'd waste my love language on her."

"Sure," Talia said, her eyes darting between Piper and Kiara. She hooked her arm through Jasmine's, pulling her a little closer. "At least we're honest about our feelings."

Jasmine grinned, leaning toward Talia. "Maybe because we're actually friends."

For a second, Piper and Kiara met each other's eyes, something unspoken passing between them. Then, just as quickly, they looked away, both too proud to acknowledge whatever strange connection kept pulling them into each other's orbit.

As the bell rang, Piper and Kiara exchanged one last, sharp glance. And despite the tension crackling between them, they both knew this wasn't over—if anything, it was just beginning.
