The living room was peaceful, the air cool with the late afternoon breeze that filtered in through the open window. Outside, the sun was beginning its slow descent, casting a warm, golden hue through the curtains. Inside, it was just Sage and Ezra, curled up on the carpet with a bowl of popcorn between them. It was their favorite thing to do—watch movies. And with tomorrow being Sage's seventh birthday, she wanted to make the most of this quiet time.

Ezra was already flipping through the channels, trying to decide what to watch. His face scrunched in thought, his hair a messy mop of curls as he flicked through the options on the screen. Sage leaned back on her elbows, watching him with a small smile playing on her lips.

"So, what do you wanna watch?" Ezra asked, glancing over at Sage, already knowing her answer.

Sage beamed, her excitement lighting up her face. "Aladdin," she said, almost too quickly. She had been waiting for this moment all week.

Ezra groaned playfully, throwing his head back in mock exasperation. "Again? We always watch that. You sure you don't want something new?"

Sage stuck her tongue out, her eyes twinkling with mischief. "Aladdin is the movie. You're just jealous you don't get to sing along with me."

Ezra rolled his eyes but smiled anyway, already reaching for the remote. "Yeah, yeah. I'm lucky I get to watch it again with Sagey."

Sage glared at him, but the grin on her face betrayed her annoyance. "Sagey? Really?"

Ezra shrugged, the mischievous glint never leaving his eyes. "What? It suits you." He clicked the play button and the opening credits of Aladdin flashed across the screen.

Sage smirked, nudging him playfully with her elbow. "You're lucky I like it." She settled in, curling up against him, her head resting on his shoulder. The familiar comfort of his presence filled her with warmth, like nothing could touch her when Ezra was near. The soft hum of the music filled the air as the movie began, and for a while, nothing else mattered.

Ezra's arm was around her, the warmth of his body making her feel safe. His fingers lightly brushed against her arm, and she nestled deeper into him, knowing this moment would be one of the few things that stayed constant in her life. It was like the world outside didn't exist. There was only the two of them, watching the movie and laughing at all the same parts.

"Tell me you're not singing 'A Whole New World' in your head right now," Ezra whispered, his voice teasing as the song played.

Sage looked up at him with a mischievous glint in her eyes. "I'm not singing it. You are."

Ezra laughed quietly, his chest vibrating with the sound. "You're right. I'm always singing it." He paused for a moment, just enjoying the simplicity of the moment. "We should go on an adventure like Aladdin and Jasmine."

Sage looked up at him, her eyes full of the same wild dreams they always shared. "I'd like that. We could leave here, go anywhere. Just the two of us."

Ezra nodded, his face lighting up with excitement. "I'm serious, Sage. We could go anywhere. Anywhere we want."

Sage smiled, her heart swelling with warmth. She didn't need to go anywhere else, not when she was with Ezra. Everything felt right here, like they were in their own little bubble of comfort, away from everything.

The movie continued to play in the background, but Sage was starting to drift, her eyelids heavy. The soft rhythm of the music was like a lullaby, and she could feel herself relaxing, sinking deeper into the moment with Ezra. The sound of his breathing, steady and calm, was all she needed to feel at peace.

But just as she was about to fully succumb to the warmth of the room, there was a loud creak from the hallway, followed by the unmistakable sound of heavy footsteps. Sage's heart dropped, and she stiffened, immediately recognizing the sound.

Her dad.

She didn't need to look up to know he was there. His presence filled the room with a cold, unnerving weight. The comfort she had felt moments ago evaporated, leaving a tight, heavy knot in her stomach.

"Sage," Randy's voice cut through the air like a knife. It wasn't a question. It was a command.

Sage's breath caught in her throat, and she tried to ignore the tremor in her hands as she slowly pulled away from Ezra. The warmth of his body was gone in an instant, replaced by the chill of her father's presence. She glanced at Ezra, offering him a quick smile, though it didn't reach her eyes.

"Let's go," Randy repeated, his voice harsher this time. His eyes were narrowed, fixed on Sage with an intensity that made her stomach churn.

Sage's throat tightened, but she stood up, reluctant to leave the comfort of her friend. She glanced at Ezra, her eyes full of a silent apology, but he was already looking at her, confusion and concern flickering in his gaze. She knew he didn't understand, but he never asked questions when it came to her dad. He just accepted it, as if that made it easier for both of them.

"Tomorrow," she said, her voice barely above a whisper, trying to keep the tremor out of her words. "I'll see you tomorrow, okay?"

Ezra's face softened, but there was still worry in his eyes. "Of course, Sage. I'll be at your birthday party, right?"

Sage's lips quirked up into a small smile. "You better be. I'm counting on you."

Ezra nodded, his smile wide and full of warmth. "Wouldn't miss it for the world."

Sage's heart ached, but she nodded in return. "I promise I'll see you tomorrow. It's going to be the best birthday."

But as she turned to leave, her eyes caught something that made her pause—just for a second. There was a red stain on her dad's shirt, dark and smeared, almost blending in with the shadows. It made her stomach lurch, but she didn't have time to think about it. Randy's grip on her arm tightened, pulling her toward the door with a rough force that made her wince.

Without another word, he yanked her out of the living room, the door slamming shut behind her, leaving Ezra alone with the fading sound of the movie in the background.
