As L stepped towards the ledge eyeing the drop, he felt a loud ringing noise coming from his pant pocket followed by a disturbing vibration. He reached into his worn pockets and pulled out his phone, flipping it open with a snap of his wrist. It didnt say who was calling him nor did he have any idea that he even had his phone on him until that moment. But his curiosity took over and he picked up. The other line was silent other than the overlapping sound of that pittering rain emitting from both ends.
There was an empty silence between the two, other than the rain which would come through the speaker on occasion until a voice finally answered his unspoken words.
"Hello?"
Before L could even register the word, his line of eyesight darted from looking blankly at the rooftop to the figure across from him, who was holding his phone to his ear. L knew that voice, and the owner of that voice was looking directly at him now. There were so many things he wanted to ask, so many questions that had gone unanswered. But his mouth flew faster than his mind, and asked for him.
"You're kira, and you killed me...
Why?"

At that moment the thundering rain on the other end had never been louder.
There was a moment of anxious heavy breathing on the other line as L awaited his responce.
Light Yagami, why did you kill me?
Maybe in another universe, another timeline, we could have been able to work together. Light had a brilliant mind. He understood why Light had killed him but he wanted to hear Light confess to killing him. He wanted Light to hold onto the guilt of killing him for as long as they are apart,
"You were in my way, I had no choice."
Light responded.
Thats exactly what L had suspected. He just wanted to hear it from light, atleast once.
he wasnt one to second guess himself, his observations and accusations were always right according to each of his completed cases.
There was a slight shift in the tone of the rain on the other end but none the less, still felt strangely comforting to L in its own eerie way.
"I suppose you're right.. If I were in that situation, I most likely would have done the same."
In that moment of Ls nonchalant staring at Light, he had reciprocated the action, just standing there letting the rain engulf him, staring right back at L with a painted expression of sorrow, regret, and overall pity. But beyond that, there was also relief and accomplishment for what he'd done. Which L couldnt blame him for. The Kira case was his hardest case yet, and his last.

Before Light could respond L said something that caught him completely off guard, not because it was concerning, rude, or unhinged, but because of how out of the blue it had been.

"The rain is lovely today isnt it?"
Light had chosen to remain silent, and let the rain wash over them as he pondered what to say next.
"I guess it really is,"
Light took a moment to reel in a shaky breath,
"You knew I was going to kill you, didnt you. And yet you refused to change that fact, why?"
Light had had that on his mind ever since he looked L dead in the eyes with a venomous smirk as he watched the life drain out of him, the day that he had died.
