Chapter 4

A few days later...

Riker POV

I'm getting worried my family is going to notice that every time I leave the house, I'm dressed in black. But nobody has noticed yet.

Aubreigh met me in the lobby of the building again. She told me to bring my swimsuit again, so I was paranoid she was going to try to push me in the pool when I wasn't paying attention.

"Go get changed," Aubreigh said.

I went to the bathroom and got changed. Every time I come here, I just keep getting more and more nervous.

Aubreigh brought me outside to a grassy area near the track. And there was a guy waiting for us.

"Riker, this is Agent Curt Mega. He will be helping with training today. You're going to practice running towards danger," Aubreigh said.

I already don't like the sound of this.

"See this tennis ball? You're going to try to get this before I call time. If you don't get it quick enough, there will be consequences."

Aubreigh set the ball down on the grass between her and Curt.

"What are the consequences?" I asked.

"You'll find out if you're not quick enough," she said.

She made me back up about 20 feet. This seems simple enough. I don't know what danger I'm exactly running towards. But maybe today will be an easy day.

"Go!" Aubreigh shouted.

I started running. But Aubreigh and Curt both threw water balloons right at my face and I fell to the ground. My eyes were stinging and my face hurt.

"Get up!" Aubreigh shouted.

I stood back up, but I didn't move. Aubreigh and Curt threw more water balloons at me, but I shielded my face from them.

"Time!" Aubreigh shouted.

I sighed, feeling frustrated.

"Sit down," Aubreigh said.

I sat down in the grass, wondering what my punishment was.

"Close your eyes."

I closed my eyes. And next thing I knew, a bucket of ice water was thrown on me.

"That's cold!" I yelled.

"Then you should've gotten the tennis ball. Get up," Aubreigh said.

I stood up again.

"Go!"

I kept my head down this time and ran straight for the tennis ball. And I got it this time.

"Good," Aubreigh said.

I was cold from the ice water. I just want today to be over already. But Aubreigh had other plans.

"Next test. Follow me."

I followed her inside. Curt went in front of us and led us into a room that had a table and chairs in it.

"Welcome to interrogation," Aubreigh said.

She made me sit down across from Curt at the table. And she sat next to me.

She put an index card down in front of me on the table that said "You are not Riker Lynch."

I looked at Aubreigh, confused.

"What's your name?" Curt asked.

I looked at him.

"Riker?" I asked, slowly.

Aubreigh threw another bucket of ice water on me.

"Are you stupid!? Did you read the card!?" Aubreigh yelled.

"What's your name?" Curt asked again.

"Um... J-Jeff Sterling," I said, remembering one of the characters I've played before.

"Where are you from?"

"Ohio."

"Do you know Riker Lynch?"

"No."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"Who is this?"

He showed me a picture of myself.

"I don't know."

"If you're from Ohio, what are you doing in California?"

"Visiting family."

"What family?"

"My aunt and uncle."

"Do you have any siblings?"

"No."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"Who is this?"

He showed me a picture of Ross.

"I don't know."

"This isn't your brother?"

"No."

"So you wouldn't care if I had him locked up in jail right now then?"

"What!?"

Aubreigh threw another bucket of ice water on me.

"What was that for!?" I yelled.

"You gave away that you knew Ross," Aubreigh said.

"I don't know what this has to do with anything!" I yelled.

"Riker, there's going to be times where you need to maintain a cover story. You can't be Riker. You might be interrogated. And you can't give away your identity. Go get changed. You failed. You're dismissed," Aubreigh said.

I rolled my eyes and went to the bathroom. I'm just getting more and more annoyed. I don't need ice water thrown at me. Why can't she just correct me?

I got changed and then left.
