A Few Days Later

The classroom was still buzzing after Haru’s announcement the other day. The news about Yuri and him had spread quickly, turning him into the focus of endless speculation. To calm things down, he managed to explain that Yuri wasn’t really his girlfriend, at least not yet; they just felt good about each other, and he’d only claimed her as such to deflect the growing excitement in the room at the time. His explanation seemed to appease his classmates, though it also triggered a flood of curious questions.

Classmates:
“When did you start liking her?”
“Have you two gone on a date yet?”

In the corner of his eye, Haru noticed Minju standing quietly, listening. He wondered what she was thinking, but decided to brush it off for now.

Haru:
“We haven’t gone out yet.”

After what felt like a small press interview, the lunch bell finally rang. Taking a deep breath, Haru headed up to the rooftop, seeking a moment of peace. To his surprise, Yuri was already waiting there, smiling warmly as he approached. He found himself unable to resist her invitation, and settled beside her, lunch in hand.

As he began eating, Yuri opened her lunchbox, extending a bite of food toward him.

Yuri:
“Here. You look a bit stressed. It’ll help.”

Blushing slightly, Haru took a bite, savoring the taste.

Haru:
“Did you make this, or did your mom?”

The question softened Yuri’s smile, and a flicker of sadness clouded her gaze.

Yuri:
“No... I make my own food, and my dad’s too. My mom passed away a few years ago. So it’s just us and the shop.”

Haru felt a pang of sympathy. He hadn’t meant to touch on a painful memory, and he regretted bringing it up.

Haru:
“I’m sorry, I didn’t know…”

Yuri:
“It’s alright. You probably needed to know anyway.”

To lighten the mood, Haru patted her head gently, ruffling her hair a little. It brought back Yuri’s natural brightness, and she resumed feeding him, teasing him between bites. With his mouth full, he hesitantly brought up the question that had been on his mind.

Haru:
“So... if you’re free this weekend, maybe we could go somewhere?”

Yuri’s eyes sparkled as she teasingly leaned forward.

Yuri:
“Oh, finally asking me on a date? Took you long enough.”

Laughing, he accepted her teasing, and they set a plan to meet at the local amusement park.

The Date

Haru arrived early at the amusement park, dressed a little too formally in an effort to make a good impression. He’d gone with a casual button-down shirt and pressed jeans, hoping it struck the right balance.
