My fan concept for a sequel to the 1994 movie The Mask. Which would retcon "The Son of The Mask"
Title: The Mask Returns
Plot Concept:
In this sequel, we find Stanley Ipkiss (Jim Carrey) and Tina Carlyle (Cameron Diaz) living a quiet, comfortable life in the suburbs of Edge City. They've done their best to forget the wild events of their youth and the chaos that the mask brought into their lives. Their once-unpredictable adventures have long been tucked away in the past. But that past has a way of creeping back.
Their son, Max Ipkiss (Ryan Reynolds), is a 30-something would-be journalist. Max has charm and wit but lacks drive and focus. He lives in his parents' basement, hunched over his laptop with a steady stream of coffee and conspiracy theories. Max is convinced that his parents are hiding some incredible secret. He's heard whispers about "the mask" that his dad supposedly wore years ago, but every time he asks, Stanley and Tina change the subject, deflecting his questions with increasingly absurd excuses.
Frustrated and curious, Max decides to take matters into his own hands. Determined to uncover the truth, he ventures to the murky depths of the Edge City River where rumors say "something strange" has been spotted lately. After several failed attempts, he hooks a monstrous, green-faced fish. Wrestling it to shore, he realizes it's wearing the mask. Unable to resist, he pulls it off the fish and feels the same electric rush that his father felt years ago.
When Max dons the mask, his world transforms into a cartoonish reality, with limitless possibilities. Embracing his newfound powers, he stumbles into chaotic, exaggerated versions of his life dreams. His first few nights as the Mask involve pranks on his dead-end job, transforming drab offices into wild carnivals, and creatively eliminating traffic tickets. But his reckless antics soon catch the attention of Victor Tyrel (Cillian Murphy), the ruthless cousin of Dorian Tyrel, the mob boss Stanley fought years ago. Victor has spent years hunting down any leads on the "green menace" that killed his cousin, and he now has his eyes set on Max.
When Stanley and Tina catch wind of Max's actions and realize the mask is back, they try to reason with him. They explain the dangers he's playing with and how the mask warps its wearer's reality. But Max, caught up in the thrill of it all, brushes them off, convinced he can handle it better than his father did.
Meanwhile, Victor assembles a team of thugs and begins terrorizing Edge City to lure Max out. The stakes are raised when Victor captures Stanley and Tina, using them as bait to trap Max. It's then that Max realizes he's not as invincible as he thought and that his actions have placed his family in real danger.
In the climactic showdown, Stanley, Tina, and Max each take turns wearing the mask, forming a chaotic tag-team to outwit Victor and his gang. Each Ipkiss brings their own flair to the Mask persona—Stanley's old-school slapstick, Tina's sultry confidence, and Max's modern snark. The family, united in their masked mayhem, combines their strengths and creativity to overpower Victor's thugs, unleashing a wild sequence of comical yet heroic stunts that only the Mask can pull off.
Ultimately, the three manage to vanquish Victor and his gang, restoring peace to Edge City. Max learns a valuable lesson in responsibility and self-worth, discovering that sometimes, real strength lies in being yourself, mask or no mask.
After rescuing Max and narrowly escaping Victor's forces, the Ipkisses turn to Dr. Arthur Neuman (Ben Stein), the eccentric mythology professor Stanley confided in years ago. Dr. Neuman, now deeply fascinated by the mask's legend and well-versed in Norse mythology, confirms that the mask is indeed tied to Loki, the Norse god of mischief.
Neuman reveals an ancient prophecy: only a powerful artifact forged alongside the mask—a hammer created specifically to counter Loki's tricks—can break the mask's curse. He directs them to a small, unassuming antique store on the outskirts of Edge City where this legendary hammer might still be hidden.
The Journey to Break the Mask
Arriving at the dusty antique shop, they find the hammer displayed innocuously in a dimly lit corner. After some haggling (and a few clever distractions by Max), they manage to buy the hammer, their last hope for ending Loki's influence over their lives.
Neuman instructs them to perform the ritual at midnight, under the full moon, in the heart of the nearby woods. There, he says, the Norse gods' energy is strongest, allowing them to properly invoke the power to break Loki's trickery.
Under the eerie glow of the moon, the Ipkiss family gathers in a forest clearing, with Dr. Neuman guiding them through the ritual. Standing in a circle around the mask, they hold hands and recite an ancient incantation that Neuman has translated from the Norse texts:
"Loki, trickster of gods, we banish thee,
By the light of the moon and strength of the tree.
In these woods, we end your sway,
To shatter your curse, we send you away."With the words hanging in the air, Stanley raises the hammer, which begins to glow with a soft, ethereal light. With one final glance at his family, he brings the hammer down with all his strength onto the mask.
Breaking the Mask
The mask shatters with a powerful crack, splitting into countless fragments that scatter across the ground. A luminous green mist rises from the broken pieces, swirling and twisting into a phantom-like image of Loki's mischievous face. As it floats above them, they hear a faint echo of Loki's laughter, reverberating through the forest.
But as the mist fades into the night sky, peace settles over the clearing. The curse is lifted. Dr. Neuman nods solemnly, whispering, "It's over."
The Ipkisses share a moment of relief, realizing that the mask—and its hold over their lives—is finally gone. They leave the forest together, stronger as a family, knowing they've not only saved Edge City but freed themselves from the mask's influence once and for all.
Epilogue
Returning to their lives, Max begins his career in journalism, this time without relying on the mask's powers, ready to carve his own path. Stanley and Tina, finally free from the shadow of their past, look forward to a peaceful future.
In a final shot, the camera pans over the forest floor, showing the fragments of the mask lying scattered and powerless. Just as the wind picks up, scattering the pieces even further, we see Dr. Neuman quietly collecting them, sealing them in a box. The mask's story, it seems, may not be entirely over—hinting that its essence may one day return.
