chapter 3
making amends
╘══════╛Rafe Cameron and Aria Campbell had their entire futures planned out for them since they were practically born. Rafe would be just like his father; a witty and successful businessman. Aria would follow in the path of her real estate mother.
In their parent's eyes, they would be set for life. Aria and Rafe would marry and continue their families legacy while building their own.
But in the Outer Banks, nothing ever went to plan.
Aria tucked her hair behind her ears, the wind blowing it in every direction as her flats clicked against the dock. Her stride was confident, unlike the nerves barreling in her stomach as she approached the boat.
"Rafe Cameron." Her voice was like silk as she paused, crossing her arms.
Rafe blinked, his expression unreadable as he stared at the brunette. Arias gaze darting to the girl beside him.
Aria recognized her as a girl from the cut; Sofia. Aria had heard rumors about Rafe's possible new girlfriend, but seeing her with her short hair, hand-me-down clothing, and the obvious fact that she was a Pogue; Aria was knocked off her high horse.
"This is my friend, Sofia." Rafe caught Arias deathly stare. Sofia rattled, seeing the light die down from her eyes as Rafe introduced her.
"And I thought I was the Pogue lover." Aria cocked a brow. "I'm Aria Campbell, Rafe's ex-girlfriend."
A side of Aria that was rare, a side that showed truly how much of a stereotypical Kook she could be. That side died when she became one with the Pogues.
But now, her mother opened the doors and let the bitch right back in. And Aria was not a fire that could be tamed.
"Sophie." Aria flashed the short haired girl a sweet smile. "I have to speak to Rafe. Would you mind?"
Sofia furrowed her brows, fighting the urge to roll her eyes at the Kook princess. Rafe stood still and tall as he didn't argue in Sofia's behalf.
"Yeah, sure." Sofia nodded, her hands in her pockets. "See you around, Rafe."
Aria twiddled her fingers at the passing girl as she turned back to Rafe. She glanced around his small boat before clearing her throat and holding out her hand.
Rafe sighed lowly before helping the girl into the vessel. The silence between them was deafening as he killed the engine once they were in the middle of the choppy waters.
"What do you want, Aria?" Rafe finally spoke, coming around from the gears as he leaned against the panel.
Aria looked at him over her shoulder. His skin was a golden brown, his summer tan fresh. His head was freshly buzzed, leaving the fuzz. His eyes were tired but still that bright blue she fell in love with when she was 8.
"Can I not say hi to an old friend?" Aria shrugged.
"That's not very Aria Campbell of you." Rafe knew her. He knew her more than she did. "So, seriously, what do you want? If this is with those Pogues..."
