On October 27th, 2017  Maxine Mae Master woke up to an empty bed beside her. Usually, her sister, best friend, and most beloved person in her world would occupy that bed on a Friday morning, the one day a week both of them got an extra hour of sleep but, alas, the bed was empty.

Maxine's dishwater blond hair was a mess, strands flying in each and every direction. She yawned, stretched, and got ready for the day like it was a regular Friday morning. This was the day that her whole life, and everything she knew, would never be the same again.

Humming a new song she wrote the blond stretched one last time and opened her door. She opened it, however, to the sounds of running water. More importantly, water hitting the tile floor. Red water splashing on the ground, around the sides of the walls, seeping into the carpet.

Stepping forward her foot met wet ground. Their bedroom was right beside their own bathroom. The bathroom they spent nights talking, one in the shower, another on the toilet, doing each other's makeup that they weren't supposed to have, being sisters.

A feeling hit Maxine then. The kind you hopefully never get in a lifetime. The dread that seeps from your head to your hands, sticking to the roof of your mouth.

"Liah!" she cried hand shakily trying the bathroom door knob.

But it wouldn't turn. Maxine was hyperventilating now because deep down, she knew. She knew what she would find when the door was broken open. Still, she tried.

Throwing her whole body weight into the wooden bathroom door she continued screaming her sister's name, over and over again.

When the door finally was ripped open Maxine was met with white and red, so much red.

Her sister, her lifeline, was laying, clothed, in the bathtub they shared, wrists slit vertically, showing off her insides.

Liah was no longer bleeding, she noticed. She died long ago but her blood was seeping into the tile, into Maxine's memory. Knowing this Maxine still ran to her sister's aid, dragging her ragdoll body out of the bathtub and into her arms.

Footsteps ran up the stairs, where you could hear Maxine's cries and the sound of running water. Her neighbor, Marcell, had heard Maxine and came running.

"Girls?" She yelled into the open house.

"Call 911, please, just call!"  Max screamed while starting compressions on her dead sister's chest.

Up, down, up, down, up down, she pressed.

"Please... please... please... I can't do this without you, Lee, don't leave, you can't go, please." She cried, her numb arms giving up and falling limp at her side.

By now Marcell had made it to the bathroom door, and all she could do was watch, phone in hand.

"I'm sorry... I'll be a better sister, I swear I will." Maxine curled into a ball beside her resting sister, sobbing to herself.
