But her steps pause midway, as if remembering something, and she slowly waddles back to me. She beckons me closer, and my head lowers to her level. I look at her with curious eyes, which later widen when she wraps her tiny arms around my neck and pecks my cheek. “Thank you for the chocolate. You are a good man. God will listen to you.”
Then she dashes off into her father’s arms, and I watch, transfixed, as he lifts her, spins her around, and showers her face with kisses, her laughter echoing through the church.
Something stirs in me as I watch them. A longing I have never felt before.
I want what they have.
