Fang POV

"Let's go, Janet," I whispered softly to the white-haired, bright-eyed girl who was crouched beside me, observing the enemies from afar and deciding when best to run for her life. "The coast is clear now–the soldiers have shifted further down the street already, so if we ever had a good time to escape the city, this would be it."

Janet nodded in agreement, her piercing blue eyes twinkling as she muttered, "No better time than now, Fang."

Janet was my longtime crush–ever since high school, when our eyes first met across the empty classroom, staring deep into the other's, I had known...there was something special about this girl.

And over the years, as I got to know her better, as our friendship blossomed slowly, my feelings became more and more obvious to him, until they were crystal clear.

I was head over heels in love with Janet.

But just like in all of those beautiful love stories, you never knew whether the other person liked you back. It was impossible to tell and realise for sure, and I was not ready to take that risk at all. Definitely not.

Why? Because I feared being rejected by her. I feared ruining our friendship, which was better and stronger than ever. I feared getting hurt by her, and having to spend my days sobbing away like one of those fools in the cheesy rom-com movies that I spent hours watching day after day, not sure why he liked them so much.

Maybe it was because they reminded me of being with her, and made me feel so...

Happy. So free.

So for now, I probably wasn't going to say anything to her because of everything holding me back. One day, when I saw a clear enough signal, I would make my move in the battle for love.

I hoped that would be soon. But for her...I was willing to wait.

You can't rush fate and destiny, after all.

"Fang? You with me right now?" Janet questioned, waving her hand in front of my eyes, trying to get my attention hurriedly.

I snapped back to the present and stammered, "Um...yea-yeah."

Janet heaved a sigh of relief and told me, "Okay, we better go right now, before more of their troops come over and block the road for hours and hours again."

I nodded, looking around before I eyed the alley opposite the street, leading right to the causeway that would bring our freedom.

Janet took my hand in hers, making me blush crimson red from the contact. Together we looked into each other's eyes one last time, hoping it wouldn't actually be the last time we did.

Hoping we were looking at a bright future for ourselves.
