Fang POV
With seconds to spare, we made it to the other end of the road and into the dark alley.
"That...was...close," I panted for breath as I caught Janet's arm to steady her.
Hand in hand, we snuck down the passageway and emerged under bright sunlight again.
All of a sudden, Janet gasped, her tone a mix of fear and shock.
"What's wrong?" I wondered, shaking Janet. She had no response except a nod of her head towards something I couldn't see.
Then, as if for dramatics, the sunlight faded away to reveal...
"Son of a–" I stopped myself from cursing. But it was really difficult not to, because in front of them stood soldiers.
No. Not just soldiers.
Dozens and dozens of soldiers. All with the signature armband of the enemy military strapped around the right arm. All with blazing red eyes. All raising weapons of every sort.
"Shit," I murmured.
We darted backwards, narrowly avoiding the storm of bullets that pelted the ground where they were standing just a second earlier.
We were heavily outnumbered. By my estimate, probably fifty soldiers to one of us.
"We're not going to win like this, Fang," Janet whispered. "There are so many of them, no matter where we run, we'll eventually be found, cornered and captured."
"Well then," I returned, straightening my back and cracking his knuckles as I braced for a battle. "Time to use our powers."
<*~*>"You want us?" I shouted, my hands glowing and pulsing with blue energy. "THEN COME AND GET US THEN!"
Janet took the same pose as me, placing her fingers on her temples to form a giant, pulsing blob of pure white energy.
The soldiers growled and stepped forward, their guns in position and the sword-wielding ones rushing on by both sides of the alley.
It was time to trust, more than ever. I already trusted Janet more than anyone else, even more than myself.
I hoped she did too.
We backed against each other, the magical energy shining above us flaring even brighter, like it was ready for a fight.
With a loud bang, the soldiers opened fire, their bullets raining everywhere, so many that it would be impossible to dodge.
But it didn't matter anyways.
"Combine," I hissed venomously to command my powers to do my bidding. Instantly, the blue energy flashed brightly and surrounded us as a protective force field.
The soldiers' faces showed obvious signs of shock as the energy absorbed all of the bullets that they had fired.
"Deflect," I commanded in the same tone as earlier. The force field once again glowed brightly, and this time all the absorbed bullets were shot back at the soldiers, catching them by surprise.
At least ten of them were hit, falling and clutching their chests dramatically. A loud roar was followed by all of them charging towards us, and I narrowed my eyes as I braced my force field for impact.
Janet said nothing, instead crunching her eyebrows together in concentration before she snapped her fingers, exploding the white energy above her and causing it to release a deafening screech that made all the soldiers fall to the ground, covering their ears as the magical siren continued to wail. Then, she began to conjure up rocket fire with her abilities and launch them at the fallen warriors, burning some of them into ashes instantly.
A dozen more reddish-orange-coloured bolts continued to terrorise the soldiers as they flew everywhere, taking down those powerless fools easily and swiftly.
I struggled to keep the blue energy shield up as the soldiers struck against it continuously with their bullets, making dents and fractures in it.
By my estimation, it was only going to hold out for a minute or two more. And what would happen after that?
Well...it was anyone's guess.
