Pinball Machine

Fang POV

"Duck!" I yelled as the blue shield shattered into smithereens. That one shield required so much mental energy, I didn't have the ability to create any one anymore. So now it was just about pure mechanics, tactics and skill.

I pressed my palms together and whispered a command in an ancient language, creating a blue-and-yellow fire. Clapping my hands together, I whisked the flame towards one of the soldiers and let it scorch him. The moment the fire touched him, it started to ricochet off, burning numerous of the soldiers as it bounced here and there with the same energy that powered my chain-reaction kicks like a pinball in a pinball machine.

Janet's rocket fire, meanwhile, was weaving towards the group of soldiers who had clustered together on the side of the alley, trying to strike us with their swords. I yanked her aside just as a hailstorm of bullets flew towards us from the south, holding my nose to stop the scent of burned bodies from wafting in.

With one last hiss, I let my yellow-blue fire explode into an inferno, consuming all those wicked soldiers in its wrath and hopefully killing all of them. Janet let out one last screech and elicited loud grunts and the clang of metal hitting the stone pavement before she grabbed me and soared into the sky with her jetpack.

"There," I whispered softly as I stared at the city just on the horizon, only about two kilometres away, across a long bridge and separated by a churning river. "That's freedom."

We were soaring towards our neighbouring city when something whizzed past my ear.

"A bullet?" I gasped as I recognised a second shiny object that flew past us yet again. I whipped my head around, and spotted a whole line-up of green-uniformed soldiers shooting at us with their sniper rifles.

"Oh shit..." I swore as another few flew towards us. By my estimation it was definitely going to strike us.

"JANET!" DOWN!" I yelled.

"WHAT?" Janet returned over the loud roar of one of the enemy military's planes' engines. "I CAN'T HERE YOU!"

I had no choice but to yank her down, barely letting us dodge the bullet storm that flew past, thudding into the plane. Some must have hit the engine because the continuous roar faded away, and I shrieked as it began to fall.

Luckily this time Janet reacted, and she flew away just as the plane free-fell down, crashing into the buildings below and a fire began to light up the sky.

"LAND, JANET, WE HAVE TO LAND! WE'RE NEVER GONNA GET THERE WITH THEM SHOOTING AT US!" I screamed, pulling her aside by the arm as another one whizzed past us, this time inches away from hitting Janet's right ear.

Which was a mistake, because we lost our balance and titled, plummeting down from the sky.
