R A N V E E R

I was sitting on the bed, mindlessly scrolling through my phone, when I heard the soft sound of the bathroom door opening. I didn't look up immediately, but I could feel her presence—the way her footsteps always made the space feel warmer, more alive. Sakshi, wrapped in her night suit, walked towards the dressing table and started drying her hair. I didn't mean to distract her, but the familiar urge to check on her, to make sure she was okay, got the better of me.

"Thik se sukhao baal, bemaar pad jaogi, warna," I said, without looking up from my phone.

She didn't respond right away, but I knew she was making faces, as usual, annoyed by the constant attention I gave her.

"Ab kya hua?" I asked, glancing at her.

"Nothing, sojayiye aap," she replied, her tone distant.

I could feel the shift in her mood, the familiar tension that often seemed to hang between us.

"Matlab 24 ghante mein 23 ghante tumhara mood kharab rehta hai, had hai yaar," I said, trying to lighten the moment with a tease.

"Acha?" she responded, her voice flat.

"Mood measuring meter hota na, toh wo bhi toot jata overloaded hoker, kyunki uski counting ke upper tumhara mood kharab rehta hai," I added, a playful grin tugging at the corner of my lips.

Her eyes flickered towards me as she let out a sigh. "Kapde gheele hone pe main gussa kar rahi thi, haina?"

I looked at her, not understanding what she was getting at. "Mai wohi toh puch raha hu, kyu araha hai gussa? Wajah toh batao," I asked, setting my phone aside.

She hesitated, then looked at me, her eyes darkening with something I couldn't read. "Aapko nahi pata na wajah?" she said, her voice trembling slightly.

"No, pata nahi. Isliye toh pooch raha hu," I said, trying to keep the conversation light, but I could sense something deeper beneath her words.

"Rehne dijiye phir," she said, her voice barely above a whisper as she turned away.

"Sakshi, nahii! Batao, kya wajah hai? Shyd main solve kar du," I said, my hand reaching out to stop her as she grabbed her pillow and started walking toward the sofa.

Before I could hold her back, I could see the anger building inside her, something she was struggling to keep in check. But then her phone rang. It was Avni. The moment her friend's name appeared on the screen,  and she quickly answered.

"Hello?" she said, her voice already shaky.

"Ek baat batani hai, Sakshi," Avni said, and the words she spoke next felt like the ground beneath me crumbling away. "Uncle is no more... unko heart attack aaya tha. Sab tera phone try kar rahe the, par unreachable tha aur Ranveer ka bhi out of reach tha."
