It was our first day of school and already, things weren't going as planned. Allison and I, both of us had slept through my alarm, throwing the morning into chaos. We'd scrambled to get dressed and ready, and thankfully, dad had offered to give us a lift to school. Now, we were sitting on a bench near the stairs leading up to the front entrance, waiting for the vice principal to meet us. The crisp morning air carried a faint chill, adding to my unease as I glanced around at the unfamiliar school grounds.

The previous night's encounter was long forgotten.

I crossed my arms, shooting a sideways glance at my sister. "I can't believe you made me wear the same thing as you, Ally. We're not twelve," I muttered, glancing down at our matching denim jackets and black pants in disgust.

Allison grinned, clearly amused by my annoyance. "Oh, come on, it's cute! Besides, people will know we're sisters. It'll be fun." She nudged me with her elbow. "And at least you got to pick the boots. You've got to admit they look awesome."

I rolled my eyes but couldn't help glancing down at my boots, which were rugged and dark, with a hint of edge that suited my style. "Yeah, I guess. But next time, I'm picking the whole outfit."

Before Allison could respond, her phone started buzzing. She glanced at the screen and whispered to me, "It's Mom. She's probably calling to see how we're doing."

I nodded as she answered the call, her phone braced between her ear and her shoulder as she dug through her gray canvas bag. Her voice dropped to a soft tone as she spoke, "Hey, Mom! Three calls on our first day is a little overdoing it."

I heard mom's voice and Allison groaned, "Yeah, everything except a pen. Oh, my God, I didn't actually forget a pen." She glanced at me, silently asking me if I had an extra pen. I shook my head as a no, I always carried around one pen just to lose it at the end of the day. Allison then motioned me to check my phone and when I did, I rolled my eyes immediately. Dialing the number back, I waited for him to pick up.

"Seriously, dad, five missed calls? You know my phone's always on silent." I said as soon as he picked up.

"I know but I forget sometimes. Anyway, how is it there? How are you both adjusting there? Are you enjoying your new school? Did you make any friends?" He kept on asking. I smiled amusingly and looked at Allison, who was still talking to mom. Looking at it, it could be said that our parents sure had their favorites.
