I remember a time, sat across from my father, in his kitchen staring at the glass of water he placed on the table. He had told me to miss school that day and expected me at the crack of dawn sat at the table.

In those times, I never disobeyed him. I wouldn't have even dreamed of it. His expression as he paced in front of me would seem unreadable to anyone who looked but I could see the cold anger inside.

His tone was mocking, yet warning. "Do you know why you're here? Sitting here, looking like you're trying to stop yourself from looking at me with disgust. It's a pathetic attempt really."

He was trying to make me confess to something I haven't done so he could punish me but I knew better. "Did I do something to your disliking?" My voice was small against his.

He chuckles, running his fingers along the table. "Did you do something...I'll give you another chance to make this right. Do you know why you're here?" His eyes burn into my soul.

He was in one of those moods and if I didn't 'confess' he'd find something to pin the blame on me and it would be worse. I glance away looking at the door. It would be easier to run but he would find me sooner or later. "I'm sorry- I didn't mean to make you angry." I choke out.

He steps slightly closer. "Didn't mean to..didn't mean to— that's all you can come up with! You don't mean to ruin everything, you don't mean to make a mess of every single job that I assign to you. But somehow, you still manage to do it." He was furious but I had no idea what he was so mad about.

I knew staying quiet would only anger him more and I didn't feel like going into the basement again. "You're right. I should've been more prepared, it won't happen again." I tried to sound confident but I was worried.

He licks his lips. "You know what I've noticed with you. Everytime you open your mouth, it's lies and excuses. Do I look like an idiot to you, Vera? You think I wouldn't notice the way you screw things up on purpose so you can spend more time with that friend of yours?" He snarls. He always hated Miles.

"No Sir, I'm trying—" he holds up his hand stopping me. Miles would wonder why I wasn't in school today. He would question me until I told him. That is if he lets me out of this house in the next coming days.

"Trying? Let me enlighten you to what you're trying to do. You're trying to embarras me. And you're doing a damn perfect job. Walking around like a ghost, like you would rather be anywhere else but here. You think I don't feel it? Your pathetic presence suffocates every room you walk in." I flinch at his words. It's not the first time he's told me this.

"I'm sorry Sir. I'll be more conscious about my presence now that you've told me you don't appreciate it." My face was flustered trying to grasp at anything to make that door stay shut with me on this side.

He comes right next to my face pointing his finger to the side of my head. "That's why nobody wants to be around you. I understand now why your mother decided to get rid of you. You should be great full I took you in."

My hands clench at the mention of my mothers name. He always knew how to get inside my head. "You have no right to talk about her." He laughs actually surprised i disagreed with him. The only time I ever did was when he mentioned the two of them.

"No right? Oh I see, you're the one in charge around here now, is that right? I can talk about anything I see fit in this house, Vera. One day you will finally wake up and understand that. Until then, you're just a ungrateful brat, sucking the life out of anyone who gets close to you. You're like a reaper of death." He pretends to be disgusted at the sight of me.
