Series: Beauty and the Beast, Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure
-so, when I started watching the animated Tangled series, I noticed something kind of familiar about the appearance of one of the side characters
-Quirin, the leader of Old Corona, a member of the Brotherhood (and Varian's dad) has a weird resemblance to Gaston
-he's a tall, muscular, dark haired guy that wears pretty much the same clothes Gaston does (red tunic, black pants, black boots). The only changes are that he cut his hair and added a vest.
-however, Quirin is a much more likeable guy than Gaston, but Gaston might just have become more mature and nice when he grew up
-if the Quirin=Gaston theory is correct, he would have been married and had a kid, and that can definitely change a person
-there's also a really neat irony to this theory
-Gaston, at the beginning of Beauty and the Beast, is seen laughing when Maurice blows things up
-if Gaston is Quirin, then his son is Varian, who makes things explode on a much larger scale in Tangled the series
-however, unlike his Gaston days (making fun of Maurice, trying to get Belle to stop reading), Quirin never tries to get Varian to change. Sure, he tries to tell him not to do things with his alchemy that are dangerous, but Quirin never wants his son to stop doing what he loves. If the theory is true, then he's come full circle from what he used to be like, and I like that.
-in Tangled the series, one of the books at the library is Beauty and the Beast. To my knowledge, it's the only other Disney series references in Tangled.
-Quirin is also a pumpkin farmer. He has a provincial life in a little town.
-according to Varian and the Seven Kingdoms source material, Quirin's wife, Ulla, was incredibly smart. She also kind of looks like Belle, just with red hair instead of brown. Maybe if Gaston couldn't get 'the girl', he found someone close enough to fall in love with instead.
-Gaston can only read pictures in Beauty and the Beast. The Demanitis Scroll, the magic document that holds the secrets of the Sundrop Flower, is written entirely in pictures. Quirin is in charge of keeping part of it, and while he can read that, I can find another occasion where he reads anything else.
-In season 3 of Tangled the series, during the scene in the bar where all the characters present are shown singing, Quirin seems to be alone in the fact that he doesn't sing. If he really is Gaston, maybe he's learned that he shouldn't sing in taverns...
-in his first scene in Beauty and the Beast, Gaston has shot a raccoon that he has in a bag. In Tangled, Varian's pet is a raccoon, one that seems to kind of avoid Quirin. Maybe the raccoon knows...
-Varian also has the same colour scheme as Belle in the first season (mostly blue), and the same colour scheme as Gaston in the third (black and red). I think this is a coincidence, but because it fits with my theory, I'm throwing it out there.
-Gaston also doesn't seem to be able to mend clothes properly, having big, awkwardly sewn patches of cloth over holes in his socks and jacket. In season one, Varian's shirt has a similar patch job on the elbow, despite the fact that Varian sews a life size stuffed doll of himself in the season finale. It kind of seems like his dad did the repair job on the shirt.
-Varian has a lot of protective gear for his alchemy that he probably wouldn't have gotten for himself. He has goggles, gloves, a big coat, and a welder's mask. Quirin is obviously a protective patent, but maybe more so if he's Gaston, and doesn't understand how science/alchemy works.
-Quirin also lets Varian read the Flynn Rider books, where the main character isn't exactly a hero. If Quirin himself wasn't exactly a hero when he was younger, he'd probably have less of a problem with the books than if he was always a good guy.
-Varian's amber blaster is shaped like a gun. There aren't any guns in Tangled. Gaston, however, has a gun. Quirin also has plenty of things hidden that no one but himself is supposed to look at. Maybe the gun was one of them, at least before season three.
-Quirin is best friends with King Frederick. In Kill The Beast, the prequel book about Gaston, Gaston was best friends with the beast before the curse. He'd know how to be friends with royalty.
-it also raises the interesting theory that all the members of the Brotherhood are former Disney villains. I can see Hector being Scar...
-finally, on a less serious note, in the life action Beauty and the Beast, Gaston tells Belle that they would have adorable children. If Gaston is Quirin, then his son is Varian, who is certainly an adorable character.
