The days following their confrontation were strange, to say the least. Budo’s presence felt almost magnetic—wherever Ayano went, it was as if he wasn’t far behind. It wasn’t that he was following her, exactly, but whenever she looked around, there he was, watching her with that same intensity.
Ayano knew she had to be careful. Budo’s intuition was sharper than she had expected. If she wasn’t careful, he’d figure out exactly what she was planning. But he wasn’t the only one keeping secrets. She was just as determined to protect her own.
One afternoon, Ayano decided to slip away to a quiet corner of the school courtyard, where she could keep an eye on Taro without interruption. But, as she was hiding in the shadows, she felt it again—the prickling sensation of someone’s gaze. She glanced over her shoulder, her heart sinking. Budo was standing there, arms crossed, a smirk on his face.
“Are you always this subtle, Ayano?” he asked, his voice quiet, but his tone mocking.
Ayano didn’t flinch. She turned to face him, her expression calm. “You’re one to talk,” she replied, her voice steady.
Budo chuckled softly, stepping closer, his dark eyes watching her with an unsettling intensity. “I thought you were hiding something from me. You’re always slipping off somewhere, watching people from the shadows. But it’s not just anyone, is it? You’re always watching him.”
Ayano’s pulse quickened. She had been so careful to avoid suspicion, yet somehow, Budo had pieced it together. But she wouldn’t let him control the situation. She met his gaze, holding it firmly. “Why do you care?”
Budo’s smirk faded slightly, and his gaze darkened. “Because I don’t like secrets. I don’t like people lying to me. And I especially don’t like people who think they can fool me.”
Ayano felt a chill run down her spine. This wasn’t just curiosity. Budo’s protectiveness over Taro wasn’t normal, either. He was looking at her like she was a puzzle he was determined to solve.
“Let me make one thing clear,” Ayano said, her voice cold. “Taro is none of your business.”
Budo’s lips twitched, and a spark of something dangerous flashed in his eyes. “Oh, I think he is. You see, I don’t take kindly to people who mess with my friends. Especially ones who lie about their intentions.” His voice softened, but his tone remained menacing. “And I think you’re not being honest about yours.”
Ayano’s calm mask slipped ever so slightly. She wasn’t used to being challenged. Usually, her quiet demeanor allowed her to slip by unnoticed. But Budo wasn’t falling for it. He was watching her like a predator, just as relentless as she was.
But she wasn’t about to back down. “So what are you going to do?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper. “Report me to the teachers? Try to stop me?”
Budo stepped closer, his face inches from hers, and Ayano felt her pulse racing despite herself. “No, Ayano. I’m not going to stop you.” His eyes gleamed with something dark and unreadable. “In fact... I think I understand you more than you realize.”
Ayano’s heart pounded in her chest. There was something in Budo’s gaze, something that mirrored her own hidden obsessions. It was almost as if he recognized a part of himself in her, and that realization made her uneasy.
“Think of this as a warning,” he murmured, his voice low. “Whatever you’re planning, you’d better be ready for someone else to play the game, too.”
Ayano swallowed, her throat dry, but she didn’t let her expression falter. She could feel his challenge, unspoken but undeniable. She knew what she wanted. Taro was hers. But now, Budo had declared himself as a new player in her game. And as much as it unnerved her, a part of her couldn’t ignore the thrill that came with the challenge.
Budo finally stepped back, giving her one last look, as if assessing her reaction, before he turned and walked away, leaving Ayano alone in the courtyard. She watched him go, her mind racing. Budo was becoming a problem, one she hadn’t anticipated.
But as she stood there, watching his figure disappear around the corner, she realized something she hadn’t expected. The thrill of his challenge had left her heart racing in a way that even Taro never had.
And for the first time, Ayano felt the stirrings of a new obsession. One that was darker, more intense, and far more dangerous.
