Garnet
I fused so I could drive everyone home from the hospital. Beach City does not have a hospital so Steven was born in Empire City a hour and a half away. The time being about 2 in the morning Greg was exhausted and Amethyst usually goes to sleep for at least four hours on most days, so those two went to sleep in the back of Greg's van.Pearl insisted on holding Steven, and Ruby and Sapphire didn't argue.
Once fused, I hopped into the drivers seat and Pearl got into the passenger seat with little Steven securely in her arms.
Being a gem I didn't need sleep, fatigue wouldn't be a problem. And with the help of future vision I could find the best route home. I was also the best driver out of the gems. I just had to fuse to reach the pedals.
As we leave the city I look over and see Pearl staring out the window, checking on Steven, and going back to the window every couple seconds.
"He is still here." I ashure her in a joking matter. She gives me a pointed look, then it softens into a smile.
"I know." She says, "He's so adorable when he sleeps." I nod and glance over then back to the road.
"Garnet?"
"Hmm?"
"What are we going to do? We've never raised a child. Amethyst was fending for herself when we found her. Steven is helpless. He needs us, and I think we may need him."
"I'm not sure, Pearl. But we aren't doing this alone. Greg is his father, he is going to help raise Steven too. We are going to have to look after him. We can't all go on missions for days at a time and leave him, and Greg has a job to keep. We will have to make missions a second priority."
I glance over. Pearl is looking at me and I can see a hint of tiredness. She may not eat hardly anything, but she has taken to sleeping every once and a while. We don't have to retreat into our gems as often if we can rest for as short time.
"He is going to need lots of sleep. He is also going to need to eat, a lot." Pearl cringes a little. "That means he is going to need a lot of diapers too."
I look over again and Pearl is still looking at me. "Were gonna get through this." I say, "Together."
"Together."
Steven yawns, whimpers a little bit and goes back to sleep.
Deer! My future vision tells me. I ease up on the break and sure enough three does and a baby fawn cross the road.
"Don't want to break up a family." I say. Pearl smiles.
"I'm going to try and get a little sleep." She tells me.
Five minutes later I hear her breathing slow and she is asleep.
'Sapphire, are you nervous?'
'Of course, but I know the four of us can do this. ... There is a bump coming up.'
'Yup, I see it.'
I slow the car again and nobody is woken up.
'Sapphie, do you know if Steven is going to have powers?'
'Yes, but he is half human. He is different, unlike anything else in the universe. He's one of a kind. He is not going to learn his abilitys easily. He is going to need lots of support.'
'That's what we are gonna do then.'
We pull in next to the temple and I turn around. All four of them are still asleep.
'Let's leave them to their sleep.' Sapphire thinks.
'Good idea'
First I pick up little Amethyst, she is so much smaller when we are fused. I carry her to the temple and set her on the bed we have for when steven gets bigger, his crib a few feet away.
Then I go back for Greg. He just lost Rose too, he can sleep in the temple tonight. I set him on the couch.
I go back one last time and see Pearl still holding Steven, both lost in sleep. I carefully pick them both up and carry the two up to the bed I set Amethyst in. Then I look around.
I unfuse and
Sapphire
Look over at Ruby, a small yawn escaping her mouth. She grinns sheepishly and we both climb in bed with the other three.'Welcome home, Steven.' I think as sleep engulfs me.
