The world around me stopped. Well, not really, but everyone turned to stare at me and him. The music didn't stop though; it kept playing in the background as if nothing had happened.
"Let me through, please," I heard Jessi's voice calling from behind the crowd of students. Moments later, her face appeared through the sea of bodies. I didn't care.
"What's your problem, huh?" I grabbed Mattheo by the collar. He had already regained his composure, and now he just looked angry. No more shock. No more surprise. "What did I ever do to you? I haven't told anyone what I saw, so why are you making my life hell?!" I felt Jessi's hand on my shoulder, trying to pull me back, but I shrugged her off. Mattheo didn't even flinch.
"Aewyn..." Jessi mumbled, glancing over at Draco and Lorenzo. They stood there, looking like they'd pounce on me the second Mattheo gave the command. Stupid lapdogs.
"Tell me, Mattheo. What do you think will happen if I spill what really went down? Should I? I'm so close to doing it!" Mattheo raised an eyebrow, completely uninterested. God, he was provoking me on purpose.
"You little prick!" I raised my fist again, but this time, he caught it mid-air.
"Aewyn, do you even realize what a huge mistake you just made?" His voice was calm—a stark contrast to the storm raging in his eyes. I bit my lip hard enough to taste blood.
"Screw you!" I choked back my tears. "Why are you doing this? For what? Look at this!" I shoved my arm in his face, showing him the burn from the cigarette he'd pressed into my skin earlier. "For this? Just because—"
"Shut your damn mouth." His grip on my wrist tightened. His face burned with fury. Jessi shifted nervously from one foot to the other.
"Mattheo, stop. She's drunk, and you know it," she pleaded, her eyes darting between us.
"Why should I? Looks like she wanted this. Why should I stop what she started?" Jessi rolled her eyes, exasperated.
"I started this? You were the one—" Mattheo's hand clamped over my mouth.
"I said shut up, princess." He was fuming. Okay, I'd hit him, but that didn't give him the right to act like this. I hated him so much.
"Med mpfe mpfo myu mbamfbad." Let me go, you bastard. That's what I tried to say into his palm. He let go and shoved me back. Jerk.
"Take her somewhere I don't have to see her," Mattheo ordered Jessi, who immediately began to pull me away. "You should be grateful you're wasted, princess."
I growled. Yes, I actually growled. Just another sign of how far gone I was. Jessi dragged me to a corner, her expression a mix of shock and disbelief.
"Were you trying to get yourself killed? Now they're never going to stop making your life hell. That was a terrible idea."
"I told you I shouldn't have come," I muttered. I already felt weird—a mix of dizziness and headache—but I ignored it.
"Aewyn!" A familiar voice called out from behind. Lily. My ex-"best" friend. Of course. The second she'd heard that Riddle had it out for me, she'd dumped me like yesterday's trash. She was a Gryffindor. She was popular. And she had a massive crush on Mattheo.
"Lily. What do you want?" Of course she was here. She belonged at parties like this, just like any other backstabbing snake. And naturally, she wouldn't pass up a chance to disappear with Mattheo by the end of the night and not show her face until morning.
"Who do you think you are?" She flicked her blonde curls over her shoulder. "Why are you picking fights with Mattheo? You're the one who screwed up." Right. Because that's what everyone thought. As if I had done something terrible. I hadn't. Not really. Nothing that deserved this.
"Leave me alone. If you care so much about his well-being, why don't you go check if he needs someone to help him cool off?"
Lily glared at me, clearly understanding my dig."You know what, that's—"
"I said get lost, Lily, and keep sucking up to Mattheo if he's that important to you."I was mean. I knew it, but she deserved it. I hated her. I had trusted her, and she had left me to drown.
"Aewyn, you little bi—"
"She said, get lost." Jesus. What was he doing here now? Lorenzo loomed behind Lily, towering over her by at least a foot. Lily stared up at him, bewildered.
"L-Lorenzo..." she stammered. Pathetic. "What are you doing here?"
"Dumb question. This is my common room," he replied coldly.
"Go, Lily." His voice was like ice, and Lily shrank back, visibly intimidated. Jessi grinned. So did I. With one last venomous glare, Lily turned on her heel and stormed off.
"And you, Lorenzo?" Jessi asked. "If I remember correctly, Mattheo said we should leave." His features softened.
"I just wanted to apologize to you, Jessi." I glanced between the two of them, feeling the dizziness intensify. "Can we talk... in private?"
Jessi looked at me, and I nodded. For the second time that night, I was left alone. I leaned against the wall for support. Crap. What was in those drinks? A shiver ran through me, my short dress offering no protection against the cold. My legs buckled, and I crumpled to the floor. Jessi cried out when she saw my trembling form.
"Someone get a jacket or a blanket—now!" Her voice sounded like it was coming from the other end of a tunnel. Then everything went black.
I felt something warm wrap around me. The heavy scent of cologne and cigarette smoke surrounded me.
Then I passed out.
