I was frozen. Her words echoed in my head like I was stuck in a tunnel.

"She did what?" Mattheo asked, incredulous.

"She slept with the Ancient Runes teacher, Mr. Wilson, to get a better grade." What the fuck?! That was a blatant lie.

"Are you sure?" he asked, doubtful.

"Of course. I'm her best friend."

"...was," he added. She sighed theatrically.

"Of course, was. Just look at how she treats you, darling." Ugh. I wanted to throw up. Darling. Gross. How could anyone be so fake and cringe?

"So that's what you're calling me now?" he asked, clearly annoyed.

"Yes, darling." I heard something that sounded like a kiss. "I mean, we're officially dating now, right?"

Lily. That girl was just unbelievable. She would do literally anything to get closer to Mattheo. Even if it meant betraying her so-called best friend. No—betrayal wasn't enough. She was spreading disgusting lies about me. Vile. But I couldn't focus on that right now. The most important thing was not getting caught. I prayed they would just leave.

"Let's go for a swim," Lily giggled. Silence.

"No." That was all Mattheo said.

"No? But darling! Why are we even here then?" Good question. Why were they here?

"To talk. No one bothers us here." I peeked out from my hiding spot. Lily was pouting.

"But we're dating now!" Mattheo grabbed her by the waist and pushed her up against the mosaic of the mermaid. She squealed. His hand slid to her neck while the other lingered on her hip. Then he pressed his lips against hers. Ugh.

"That's better than swimming, isn't it?" he murmured. I cringed internally.

"Y...Yeah, darling," she whispered and leaned into him. Pathetic.

"I need a smoke, so let's head outside, okay?" She nodded and grabbed his hand. She looked like a trashy slut straight out of a magazine—shirt unbuttoned so low that everything was almost spilling out, the shortest skirt ever, and let's not even talk about where her left hand was headed.
I ducked back down.

When I surfaced again, the two of them had left—probably to indulge Mattheo's drug habit some more. Quickly, I climbed out of the water, grabbed my stuff from behind the column, and got dressed. Then I followed them outside.

I still couldn't wrap my head around what I had just witnessed. All I knew was that I'd be in deep trouble if I didn't do something to fix this.
I stormed into the common room, searching for Jessi. I found her in our dormitory.

"Aewyn? What happened?" she asked when she saw me standing there—my hair soaking wet, yesterday's makeup smeared, and completely out of breath.

"Lily...Mattheo...dating...Ancient Runes...Me..." I panted.

"Whoa, calm down first." I collapsed onto my bed.

"Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck," I muttered.

"Now spill."

"I went swimming because I was bored, and then Mattheo and Lily showed up. I hid and overheard everything. Lily said she knows something about me and that she'd tell him if he didn't date her. He said yes, and then she...she told him some bullshit about me. That I slept with the Ancient Runes teacher last year to get a better grade. But it's not true—I never did that. Honestly!"

"She said what?!" I told her everything, step by step. What I heard, what I saw, and why Lily was doing all of it.

"Everyone knows Lily likes Mattheo, but I never thought she'd go this far. This could ruin Mr. Wilson's career!"I nodded. But Mr. Wilson was the least of my worries right now.

"Do you think he'll spread the rumor?"

"No..." That was a lie. I buried myself under the blanket. "Keep your head up. It'll blow over."
And then I screamed. Loudly. Just to let out all the frustration.
"I'm going to deal with both of them," Jessi muttered.

"No. That'll just make it worse," I sighed.

My world was falling apart. If this rumor spread, I was done for. Mr. Wilson would lose his job. My grades would tank because no teacher would look at me objectively anymore. My already fragile social life would completely crumble—if that was even possible. Everyone would think I was some kind of whore. And if this got outside of Hogwarts...God, I didn't even want to imagine it. Goodbye, dream of becoming an Auror.

Suddenly, I heard voices outside the door. Giggles. Whispering.

"What are they doing out there?" I got up and opened the door while Jessi continued working on her homework.

No one was there.

Confused, I looked around.

"Stupid, annoying jerks," I muttered and turned to look at the outside of the door. I froze.

"What is it?" Jessi asked.

"Come here and see for yourself."
