CHAPTER NINETEEN

Third person POV

The four girls and their parents stood in the hallway, each of them caught in their own anxious thoughts. All four girls had been questioned, leaving only Chase.

"They're taking longer with him," Aria mumbled, her eyes fixed on the door she knew her brother and Spencer's mom were behind. Spencer nodded absently, her head spinning as if she were drunk. She tapped her leg nervously, but the motion stopped when Hanna gently clasped her hand.

"I told you it was sent to Spencer's computer anonymously," Chase muttered, his gaze fixed on Detective Breyer. The older man had been circling the same questions over and over, hoping to catch him in a lie.

"We saw Ian in the video. He was with Allison. He pushed her. They were together in Hilton Head right before she died. Do I need to slow it down for you?" Chase shot back, his voice dripping with sarcasm.

"Chase," his girlfriend's mom said sharply, a warning in her voice.

"It's alright," Detective Breyer replied, though his eyes never left Chase.

"Why would Ian be interested in Allison?" Breyer asked, his tone almost clinical.

Chase scoffed. "He's a creep."

"How so? Has he been interested in other younger girls?" the detective pressed, his question sharper now.

Chase's eyes narrowed. His mind flickered to Spencer, but he wasn't about to say anything if she didn't want him to.

"What, is one not enough for you?" Chase snapped. "I think we're done here."

Mrs. Hastings sighed and nodded, a silent agreement to end the interrogation. Chase stood quickly. "Thank God," he muttered under his breath as Detective Breyer led them out of the room. Once they were in the hallway, Chase couldn't keep it in any longer. "Fucking dickhead," he muttered as he joined the four girls, who were still waiting nearby while their parents talked quietly among themselves.

"Whoever said 'the truth will set you free' clearly never met A," Aria said darkly. Chase nodded, his eyes flicking to Hanna and Spencer, their hands still intertwined.

"Jesus," Emily said, breaking the silence.

Chase looked at her, confused. "What?"

"It's from the Bible," Emily said. "Jesus said it."

"Then Aria's right," Hanna said, her voice low but amused. "Because that bitch is going straight to hell."

Chase chuckled, despite the heaviness of the situation.

Spencer's voice softened, and she looked down at her and hanna's joined hands. "I wasn't completely honest in there," she admitted, her voice cracking. "I should've been. But with my mom there, and the whole thing with Wren—I just couldn't."

Her words hit Chase like a punch to the stomach, and he instinctively intertwined his hand with her free one.

Hanna squeezed Spencer's hand with a soft smile "That has nothing to do with this," The twins spoke in unison.

"I lied about it too," Emily said quietly, offering Spencer an apologetic look. Chase nodded, his expression serious.

"Sometimes telling the truth just makes things worse," Hanna said softly.
