ONE . BEFORE THE STORM
( season four, episode one )
"WHERE ARE YOU, Hye-Jin?"
His boots tapped the concrete with each step, slow and precise, as he crept forward. Like a cat posing to pounce. He had already seen the little girl, spying on the head of dark hair poking out from behind a barrel. The corner of his lips turned up in a smile.
"You can't hide forever," the man said in a sing-song voice. He redirected his trail, gentle steps edging towards the girl.
The tap of his boots against the ground was nearly muffled by the wind that brushed past them. Yet it was loud enough for the little girl to hear, shuffling in her spot to make herself smaller. But it was already too late; she'd been spotted.
"C'mere, you little–"
"I'll save you, Hye-Jin!"
A figure flew forward, barreling into the man's side. He crashed onto the ground with a pained groan and landed on his back. Stray pebbles dug into his hands, scraping the skin, and his stitches pulled on his abdomen. A heavy weight rested on his legs, pinning them down. Yet, his chest rumbled with laughter as he lay defeated.
"Ah, careful!" Binh warned softly. He gently pushed the teenager off of himself, using her shoulder to sit up properly. "The doctor will give me an earful if I tear my stitches again."
His daughter grinned, relishing her victory. "I didn't push you that hard."
"I'll remember that when I find it bleeding again."
Soo-Yun huffed as she climbed to her feet. Brushing off pebbles and dirt from her clothes, she nearly toppled over as a small weight slammed into her legs and wrapped their arms around them. The little girl by her feet giggled, clearly amused. Her hair, once combed and styled, was now a mess from their playtime.
"I think it's time for lunch, anyways," her father said. "You've got that supply coming up soon, don't you?"
Soo-Yun offered her hand, straining to pull him up onto his feet as she nodded in reply. Finally, after several test runs and practicing with a variety of weapons and guns, Soo-Yun was joining a few of the "experienced ones" on a bigger supply retrieval. It was a chance to prove herself. If it wasn't for the wound her father had managed to achieve (a stupid misfire of a gun), he would've been going in her place.
"Yep!" She said with a wide grin.
"Then, we should get moving." Binh Le ushered her daughters forward, towards the more lively part of the prison.
Grills and tables and umbrellas had all been laid out, made to host the prison's occupants for meals. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner were all provided and eaten there. As they approached the communal area, the enticing aroma of freshly cooked food filled the air, mingling with the sounds of chatter and laughter from other residents.
