When Fumikage Tokoyami strolled up to the gates of U.A. High School for the entrance examinations, the entire universe buzzed with an unforgettable energy. The sight of his image in a passing glass was still startling - a sharp-beaked face with dark feathers framing eyes that gleamed with unnatural intensity. He wasn't used to seeing himself this way. Before reincarnating into Tokoyami's body, he was a regular guy, therefore he was looking for answers and for any sign of normalcy in his new bird traits.
What bothered him even more was his Quirk, Dark Shadow. He quickly realized that the dark thing was more than just an extension of himself. Dark Shadow felt alive in a way that was both frightening and oddly... familiar. The black form spoke to him in low, sly tones, as if it, too, had lived before this. It gave details about fighting techniques, test strategies, and fast reactions - things that Tokoyami had not yet learned and that appeared to be strangely beyond the limits of what a sentient shadow could understand. The idea began to linger in his head like a gloomy cloud: gloomy Shadow was another reincarnated soul, a buddy from another life who had somehow become his Quirk.
The energy around U.A. was filled with anticipation. Students of all kinds and sizes crowded around him, straightening their uniforms, cracking knuckles, and exchanging nervous looks. The huge gates stood before him, towering against a sky the color of tempered steel. Fumikage attempted to isolate himself, bringing his nerves into clear focus.
The exams required more than just physical power; he had to surpass the best. The trouble was that he'd only recently gotten used to his new body and talents, so his instincts were still jumbled - both his own and Dark Shadow's chaotic, dark impulses, which rose whenever he lost focus.
When Present Mic's voice boomed across the field, indicating the commencement of the practical exam, the tension snapped like a coiled spring. Fumikage bolted, darting between robots that quickly advanced on him and the other students. The air was filled with explosions and yells, as well as bursts of color and light-like fireworks all around him. He hesitated, feeling Dark Shadow's tug in his chest, eager to be unleashed and consume everything in sight.
"You're holding back," came the familiar, throaty growl of his shadow.
The words cut through him, chilling and exciting. Dark Shadow understood the tone of his speech as a challenge. He recognized that tone from previous clashes and struggles. Without another thought, Fumikage let Dark Shadow appear, the inky figure spiraling upward, acquiring form and substance as it towered over him. The shadow's vicious, toothy grin matched the strength coursing through it.
Suddenly, a group of students was surrounded by a massive robot, its spiky arms dangerously close. Fumikage and Dark Shadow didn't need any words. He charged forward with a speed he hadn't completely recognized, throwing Dark Shadow into the battle. The shadow wrapped around the robot's arm like a vice, crushing the metal until it cracked beneath the pressure. Dark Shadow cackled, a wild, uncontrolled sound, and Fumikage smirked with satisfaction.
This was not the timid creature Tokoyami had known. No, this was an ally; someone who understood the pleasure of war, the art of devastation, and was as daring and stubborn as he.
They were a force to be reckoned with, a hybrid storm raging across the exam field. However, as they progressed, the air became heavier, and the robot parts they left behind appeared to pile up, drawing attention. The examiners on the sidelines mumbled among themselves, throwing strange looks at the teenage boy with the raven's face and his fierce shadow. They had not expected such raw, unfettered power from this humble applicant.
Fumikage could feel fatigue creeping in, yet Dark Shadow appeared to grow stronger with each opponent they faced. It whispered words of encouragement, boosting his confidence while also urging caution. There was a balance here, mutual respect that no one ventured to break. Dark Shadow said in a low, furtive tone, "You and I - we're bound by fate. But be careful, my friend; this is only the beginning."
The words struck a chord with him, bringing back something deeply buried. He didn't fully get Dark Shadow's meaning, but at that moment, they were one two souls entwined, reliving lives they'd left behind yet still brought with them.
With each heartbeat booming in his thoughts like a war drum, Fumikage felt his pulse pounding in his chest as the final seconds of the test passed. Dark Shadow was almost like an extension of his own heartbeat, gliding with a natural grace that appeared almost otherworldly. They were now down to a handful of robots spread around the perimeter, some half-destroyed, others working, and all aimed at any remaining students His eyes widened as he noticed one of the final zero-pointers looming in the distance, throwing a long, frightening shadow across the broken concrete.
Fumikage barely hesitated before breaking into a sprint, the energy between him and Dark Shadow thrumming like electricity in the air. Dark Shadow flickered, almost as though its form had gained a life beyond his control, pulsing and stretching with an intensity that both exhilarated and unnerved him. A low chuckle reverberated from within his chest, Dark Shadow's voice - familiar, daring him onward.
