Sydney tightened her grip on her suitcase handle and took in the sights surrounding her, the busy roads, bustling crowds and shimmering lights. New York was a world away from Santa Barbara's sunlit beaches and quiet neighbourhoods, Here everything felt raw and alive, like the city had matched the quickened beat of her own heart. After everything she'd been through this felt like a place where she could start over again on her own terms.
A car honked behind her as she paused outside the airport doors, looking around with an expression that made her look like a tourist. She hated that, being seen as out of place. She pulled out her phone rechecking the directions her manager had sent her. The plan was simple get into a cab, head to her temporary apartment and be ready to meet everyone she would be working with the next morning.
Sydney's stomach twisted with a mixture of excitement and dread as she climbed into the cab and gave the driver the address. This was her first real job and from what she had heard Benson Boone was the hottest up and coming artist in America so she knew first impressions were everything.
The driver pulled up to her building, Sydney stepped out of the cab and took a deep breath staring up at the narrow brick facade. She hauled her suitcase up three flights of creaky stairs, the scent of old wood and something faintly musty lingering in the air. When she reached her door she fumbled with her key, finally managing to push it in and open the door. Inside, Sydney was greeted by a tiny cramped studio apartment. It was smaller than she expected -much smaller. A twin bed was wedged against one wall, nearly touching a scratched up dresser beside it. The "kitchen" was really just a hot plate, a microwave and a mini fridge squeezed next to a chipped countertop.
With a resigned sigh, she set her suitcase by the door and sat on the edge of the bed, testing the mattress that squeaked under her weight, she could already tell it wasn't going to be comfortable. Sydney unpacked some of her decor that she had bought from Santa barbra to make the apartment seem more homely, she set down her most prized possession, a small dinosaur teddy that had belonged to her younger brother before he had died with her parents in the spring of last year.
Beneath her initial disappointment she felt a tiny surge of excitement this place was hers, for now, it was a step towards something new even if that meant trading ocean breezes for the sound of honking horns and shouting neighbours.
"Well New York," she muttered to herself, her voice barely filling the space. "Let's see what you've got."
