Odehm Leslie Abdul
[ PRONOUNCED OH-DEEM ]
JULY 17, 2018THE SUNLIGHT BEAMED over the basketball court, its rays causing waves of heat to warm the air that surrounded the group of boys playing outside. The five teens had been outside since the sun rose over the hills of their rundown neighborhood and didn't plan on making their way inside until their parents screamed at them to make it in before the street lights came on.
Odehm lightly bounced the ball towards Zyhir before stalking off towards the bench that held his water bottle, lifting his shirt to wipe the sweat from his face before taking a long gulp. The boy looked around the small area, eyes darting back towards the porch where his older sister sat.
"Come on Demi! You taking too long. You scared to get whooped or somethin?" Lawe, the boy's cousin exclaimed before walking up to him and snatching the water bottle from his lips.
"Aye Lawe, don't come over here bothering me while I'm getting my hydration." Odehm mugged the boy in front of him before snatching his bottle back. "That's why yo pee be coming out orange now."
"How you know that?" Lawe eyed Odehm who just pushed past him without another word being spoken.
Odehm held his hands out for the orange ball, dribbling it between his legs after it was thrown towards him.
This was the life for the young boy. He had no struggles, no worries about school because of summer break, and no responsibilities at his home. He was free to do whatever he wanted with the people he wanted to, his 4 friends who meant the world to him.
"Y'all know we supposed to be getting some new family in the neighborhood?" Izaac asked, stealing the ball before shooting it into the net with a swish.
"Nah." Odehm actually couldn't care less. He had only talked to the 4 boys standing on the court with him since he had moved in with his father and sister to the crowded neighborhood at 9 years old.
"Well my momma was telling pops about it last night. Apparently her old best friend is moving into that big house on the corner with his sons and daughter."
Odehm nodded silently, taking note of the fact that the family moving in must of had money since they were moving into the Pittman house, the biggest house around the area for almost 3 blocks.
"Odehm!" The boy's head snapped to the side once he heard his sister's loud voice yell out to him from across the street. "Tell yo friends bye-bye and come in here to wash these dishes!"
"Man Demi! You said you was staying out here with us! I been told you to wash the dishes man you know how Yona gets."
Odehm rolled his eyes, ignoring the boys words and walking over to pick up his bag from the bench, about to ask for his ball back but deciding to let the group keep it since he was going inside so early.
"Nigga probably already washed the dishes anyway." Izaak mugged him playfully, knowing that his friend loved to get his sister to call him inside acting like she needed him to do something just so he didn't have to tell the group he didn't feel like being out with them any longer.
"Nigga I forgot," Odehm replied back with a laugh, sticking his middle finger up at the others before walking over to the fence of the basketball court. "I'll get up with yall tomorrow."
He heard a chorus of responses before the sound of the basketball bouncing on the pavement could be heard once again as the group started their game back up without him.
