iii. unlikely friendship
5.02Oliver Lee-Sunny took a deep breath as he prepared the suturing needle, his eyes focused on the wound in front of him. Cristina Yang lay on the gurney, her normally sharp and steady demeanor slightly softened by the pain from the icicle wound on her stomach.
Despite the injury, Cristina's eyes were clear and alert, watching Oliver's every move.
"Okay, Cristina, this might sting a bit," Oliver said, his voice steady. He couldn't help but shift his weight from one foot to the other, his feet then tapping a restless rhythm on the floor.
Cristina nodded, "Just do it, Oliver. I'm not made of glass."
Oliver chuckled softly. He began cleaning the wound carefully, preparing to suture it. Just like he had done an hour ago to the army surgeon. "You know, it's not every day you get impaled by an icicle. Trust you to find the most dramatic way to get injured, out of all of us, it would have been me or you, yeah?"
Cristina smirked slightly. "What can I say? I like to keep things interesting."
As he started stitching, Oliver couldn't help but fill the silence. "I've always been a bit clumsy myself. My brother used to joke that I'd trip over my own feet if I wasn't careful."
Cristina raised an eyebrow, wincing slightly as Oliver pulled the suture tight. "Have you considered that you might have ADHD?"
Oliver paused for a moment, considering her words. "You know, my brothers mentioned that before. I just thought I was... energetic. Keeps my mind steady in a way, you know?" She didn't know, but she nodded anyways.
Cristina nodded, her expression thoughtful. "It's not a bad thing. It just means your brain works differently. Might be worth checking out, though. Could help you manage things better."
Oliver resumed stitching, his mind turning over Cristina's suggestion. "Maybe you're right. I mean, it could explain a lot. And help a lot."
Cristina watched him closely, having previously noticing the constant fidgeting and movement that others never really seemed to notice. "You know, you have a lot of the classic ADHD signs. Energetic, talkative, hyper-focused at times, but also can't stay still for long. You're always moving, always doing something."
Oliver glanced up at her, a mix of surprise and curiosity in his eyes. "You really think so?" He was surprised that she had noticed that much.
Cristina nodded. "Yes, and it's not necessarily a bad thing, and you know that. It just means you might need to find ways to channel that energy productively, other than surgery. You're good at this, Oliver. Don't let anything make you doubt that."
Oliver felt a warm feeling of gratitude. "Thanks, Cristina. That means a lot coming from you."
They fell into a comfortable silence for a few moments, the only sound the soft clink of instruments as Oliver worked. Finally, Cristina broke the silence, her tone more reflective.
"You know, we have more in common than you might think," she said. "I lost my dad when I was young. It's... something that never really leaves you. And we're both really good at what we do, and smart too."
Oliver looked up, surprised by the admission. "I miss him. It's tough. Some days are better than others, but it's always there."
Cristina nodded, her eyes, with a sad sparkle, meeting his. "It has made you so much stronger, Ollie, and I know it still hurts, it always will."
Oliver finished the last stitch, tying it off with a careful precision, and if he didn't, well Christina would have his head. "Yeah, it does. But I guess it also makes us who we are."
Cristina's lips curved into a small smile. "Exactly. And who we are is pretty damn amazing."
Oliver cleaned up the wound and applied a bandage, finally stepping back to admire his work. "There. All done. You'll be back on your feet in no time."
Cristina sat up slowly, testing the stitches. "Thanks, Oliver. You did great - do not tell anyone."
Oliver felt a surge of pride. "Just doing my job. And, you know, if you ever need to talk about... anything, I'm here."
Cristina's smile widened slightly. "I'm not sure whatcha talking about."
Oliver laughed, the tension easing away. "Haha."
