THE ATMOSPHERE in the Salvatore boarding house had been thick with tension ever since the revelation about Klaus. Alayna could feel it pressing down on her like a suffocating blanket, making it hard to breathe. But it was Elena's latest plan that had everyone on edge, especially Alayna.
Elena had grown quiet and determined, the fear that had once gripped her giving way to a cold resolve. She had decided that the only way to protect the people she loved was to take the fight to Klaus—to make herself bait, in hopes of luring him out of the shadows and confronting him head-on. It was reckless, dangerous, and completely out of character for the Elena Alayna thought she knew.
"Are you out of your mind?" Alayna had snapped the night before when Elena first told her about the plan. "This isn't the way, Elena! Klaus is a monster—he'll kill you without a second thought."
"I know it's dangerous," Elena had replied, her eyes dark with determination. "But if I don't do something, he'll come for us anyway. At least this way, I have a chance to control the situation."
Alayna had opened her mouth to argue, but the steely look in Elena's eyes told her it was useless. Elena had already made up her mind, and no amount of reasoning would sway her.
