She knew the moment she walked into the flat.
Tucking her smirk into her scarf, Roseanne turned around to close the door and set the lock. A gust of cold air followed her inside. Snowflakes disappeared into the wool of her coat.
"Hello, love," she said. It came out nearly sing-song.
She received no answer.
She didn't expect one.
Her smirk grew sharper. She shot a look over her shoulder, a quick glance to slice the silence. "How was your day? Alright?"
Still nothing. Only light and shadow. A silhouette and a gaze burning steadily in the half-dark, silver eyes turned gold by the firelight.
Lisa didn't move.
With a nod and a hum, Roseanne shrugged off her scarf and tossed it onto a hook. Her hands, still gloved, moved to climb down her coat, unfastening the brass buttons one-by-one.
"Not in a talking mood, I see."
She drifted around on her heel.
Lisa stood in the den slouched shoulder-to-wall, one leg cocked in front of the other. Drawing a breath, she let it out like steam. Her body rolled inside her jacket, kinetic and tensile.
She wore a look that spoke for itself.
Roseanne's hands slowed over the last of her coat buttons. Lisa's gaze slowed with them, thrumming, starved. Hot and looking for fuel. Embers, roiling with orange.
Roseanne wanted to cut clear across the floor and rake those coals into a conflagration, but—
She bent down to untie her bootlaces instead.
A car passed by outside. In the sweep of its headlights, she caught the roguishness of Lisa's smile. It glittered like a razor, all scars and wicked canine, warning of a hunger that knew patience. Roseanne exhaled. She steeled herself against her body's eager jolt. Warmth pulled up and over her like smoke.
She tugged off one shoe, then the other, setting them neatly on the mat. Slipping out of her coat, she fitted it to a hanger, hooking it onto the rack. She cast a keen look into Lisa's outline. Smoothing a hand down her skirt, she turned.
"You're really just going to stand there, are you?"
Finally. Finally, a reaction. A short, low-slung laugh, smart and swashbuckling. Lisa pushed off the wall.
Roseanne stood waiting for her in the foyer. Pulling her gloves off with her teeth, she tossed them aside. Didn't see where they landed. Didn't care.
She was suddenly very aware of her own heartbeat.
Lisa purred towards her, fading in and out of shadow. Black to red. Red to gold. Back to black again. She dipped around, prowling. Fox, feline, and fire. She vanished into Roseanne's periphery.
"Missed you."
Her words crackled like a flare.
"Oh?"
"Mm-hm."
Leather creaked. Boots scuffed. Roseanne dragged her teeth over her lip to suppress a shiver. "And what exac—?"
A hand caught her waist. She spun and Lisa was there again, smoldering within an inch of her, making fuses out of angles and curves. Roseanne allowed herself to be walked back against the wall, her arms lifting to wreathe Lisa's shoulders. She tipped her mouth towards her ear and smiled.
"And what exactly did you miss?" She teased a finger up the back of Lisa's neck. Wick for flame.
Lisa answered with teeth, scything a line along her shirt collar. Gasping, Roseanne winced, her head falling back against the wall. She tangled her fingers into Lisa's hair, breathing through the spike in her pulse. The sting faded the next instant, softened by a kiss so gentle it made her ache. The split-difference in touch made Roseanne drop forward. She raked breath and curses over Lisa's ear. She had no idea what she said.
