Morning took its time to arrive, and when it did, it broke slowly, light creeping through the mist with a reluctant grace. The rain had stopped hours ago, but everything was still soaked to its core. The air was thick and cool, carrying the fresh scent of wet earth. Beams of sunlight pierced through the breaks in the clouds, spilling into the forest and illuminating the overgrown world in a golden, ethereal glow. The abandoned railroad car where Eryn and Kali had taken shelter was quiet, the only sounds were the distant rustle of leaves and the occasional drip of water from the trees above. It was a calm, peaceful scene compared to the events that transpired there just the night before.

Inside the car, Eryn and Kali sat with their backs pressed against the cold, rusted wall, their eyes heavy with exhaustion. They hadn't slept since the harrowing encounter with the wolves and the mysterious cracking noises that had sent the predators fleeing into the night. The journey back to the train car had been a nightmare come to life of strange sounds and shadowy figures, of whispered fears, and a constant, suffocating sense of being watched. Every step felt like a gamble, every rustle in the dark a potential death sentence, every snapping twig underfoot sounded like a gunshot in the black silence of the night. By the time they had stumbled back into the relative safety of the railroad car, they were too drained to do anything but collapse against the wall and wait for morning. But exhaustion was no match for the raw, primal fear still surging through their veins, keeping them awake until first light.

Eryn let out a raspy breath, running a hand through her tangled wet hair. The golden light of the morning sun pushed through the cracks and seams of the car, bathing her cold, damp figure in warm, inviting rays. The dark circles under her eyes and the smudges of dirt on her face, however, were a testament to the dangers lurking in the beautiful, wild world just outside the door she now stared at.

Kali sat beside her, clutching her knees to her chest, her head resting against the wall. Her eyes were open but glazed over and unfocused as if she was somewhere else entirely. Finally, she broke the silence, her voice hoarse and tired. "I think I'm done. I think I've officially had enough."

Eryn managed a weak smile, though there was no humor in it. "Can't blame you. That was... the worst night of my life. Hands down."

Kali turned her head, giving Eryn a sidelong glance. "I thought you were supposed to be the optimistic one here."

Eryn sighed, rubbing her face with her hands. "Yeah, well, optimism only gets you so far when you're being hunted by wolves the size of a kitchen table."

Kali's lips twitched into a grim smile. "Point taken."

They sat in silence for a few more moments, the weight of everything they had been through pressing down on them like an anvil. The light filtering into the train car felt almost mocking, too warm and serene compared to the terror they had faced in the darkness.

Kali let out a long breath, her shoulders slumping. "Should we... go back?" Her voice cracked slightly, and she looked away, ashamed of being the one to ask the question. "I mean, we've barely made it a day, and we almost died already... Twice! Maybe this whole thing was a mistake."

Eryn's heart twisted at the vulnerability in her friend's voice. She had been thinking the same thing, but hearing it spoken aloud made it feel more real, more possible. She swallowed hard, her throat tight. "I don't know," she admitted. "Going back sounds really appealing right now. We could come up with another plan and regroup. Or we could just... forget the whole thing."

Kali's gaze snapped to Eryn, her eyes wide with surprise. "Forget it? Just... give up?"

Eryn felt a pang of guilt. "I don't know," she said, her voice small. "Maybe. I mean, look at us. We're exhausted, we're unprepared, and we're way out of our depth. If something like last night happens again, we're screwed. And even if we survive, who knows what's waiting for us further north? Maybe it's not worth it."
