After the Break: Back at University

The holiday break ended as quickly as it began, and the bustling energy of campus life returned. I settled back into my routine, lectures filling my days, and the late-night study sessions reminding me how far I'd come—and how far I still had to go.

Even though winter still lingered, there was something fresh in the air, like the campus was waking up after a long sleep. The buzz of students, new faces mingling with old ones, made it easy to stay distracted. But some things couldn't be ignored.

I'd been avoiding Daniel since we returned to school, unsure how to approach the tension lingering between us after New Year's Eve. He'd been kind, steady, as always, but there was something guarded about him now, as if he were keeping me at arm's length.

When I finally mustered the courage to talk to him, it was during a late afternoon when the campus seemed unusually quiet. I spotted him on the steps of the library, a book balanced on his lap. His brow furrowed in concentration, but he looked up the moment he felt my presence.

"Sophie," he greeted, a small smile tugging at his lips. "What brings you here?"

I hesitated, fidgeting with the strap of my bag. "We need to talk."

He closed his book, setting it aside. "Alright. What's on your mind?"

I took a deep breath, sitting beside him. "Daniel, I need to be honest. I've been feeling...something, and I can't keep ignoring it anymore."

His expression didn't change, but I caught the brief flicker of something in his eyes. "Go on," he said softly.

"I think I like you," I confessed, my voice steady despite the nerves writhing in my chest. "More than as a friend. I don't know when it started, but it's there, and I just—needed you to know."

Daniel looked away for a moment, the silence stretching between us. When he finally turned back, his eyes were unreadable. "Sophie, you mean so much to me," he began, his voice measured. "But I can't. I don't feel the same way."

The words hit me harder than I expected, like a cold wind cutting through my chest. "Oh," I managed to say, forcing a shaky smile. "I—okay. Thanks for being honest."

He looked down, the weight of unspoken words heavy in the air. "Sophie, it's not that I don't care about you. I do. But there are things you don't know—things that would make this...impossible."

"What kind of things?" I asked, my voice tinged with hurt.

Daniel hesitated, running a hand through his hair. "It's complicated. Just trust me on this, okay?" His tone was firm, almost pleading.

I nodded, biting the inside of my cheek to keep the tears at bay. "Yeah. Sure. Thanks for...telling me."

He reached out as if to touch my hand but stopped short, pulling back. "You'll always have me as a friend, Sophie. I hope you know that."

I nodded again, my heart aching at the finality in his words. "Yeah. I know."

### **Daniel's POV**

I watched Sophie walk away, her shoulders hunched slightly against the cold. She didn't deserve this. She deserved someone who could give her everything, and I couldn't. Not with what I knew.

I leaned back against the library steps, my chest heavy. I'd wanted to tell her, to let her in, but some secrets weren't mine to share.

Sophie's smile had always been one of the brightest things in my life, but I knew the truth would dim it. She deserved to be free of the shadows I carried—the kind that could shatter trust in an instant.

It wasn't fair, pushing her away like this, but it was the only way I could protect her. From what, she didn't even realize yet.

I exhaled deeply, looking up at the sky. This wasn't the end of the story, but it was the only chapter I could give her for now.
