The early morning sun barely peeked over the horizon when Hoseok finished his surgery and returned to his personal room at the hospital. He moved sluggishly, the fatigue from the intense operation settling into his bones. After washing up and slipping into more comfortable clothes, he sank into the couch, sighing with relief. Pulling out his phone, he called his boyfriend, Kai, who picked up almost immediately with his signature bright smile.
“Hoseokie hyung!” Kai’s voice bubbled through the phone. “How was surgery? You must be exhausted.”
Hoseok’s face softened at Kai’s voice. “It was intense, but we got through it. I’m just… dead tired.” He chuckled, running a hand through his hair. “How’s class going? You look like you’ve been studying nonstop.”
Kai laughed, nodding. “Nonstop is right. But hey, at least I’ll be joining you soon in the world of crazy hours and sleepless nights.”
The two talked for nearly half an hour, sharing stories and laughing until Kai received a notification about his next class. Hoseok pouted a little, but Kai laughed and sent him a quick kiss through the screen.
“Take care, Hobi. Don’t overwork yourself, okay?” Kai’s voice was soft, filled with genuine care.
Hoseok smiled, his heart swelling. “You too. I miss you.”
With a gentle goodbye, the call ended, and Hoseok stretched his tired limbs, leaning back against the couch. Despite the physical strain, the call had left him feeling lighter, as if a small piece of his energy had been restored. Soon after, he drifted into a much-needed nap.

Meanwhile, in the ER, Taehyung was called urgently. He rushed to find a pregnant woman in critical condition. She had fallen down a flight of stairs, and her face was twisted in pain. The nurse briefed him quickly: she was eight months pregnant, and they were worried about both her and the baby’s condition.
Taehyung’s expression was focused and determined as he assessed the situation. “We need to get her stabilized, and I’ll perform an emergency C-section. I need everyone on standby.”
The room buzzed with tension, but Taehyung’s calm presence reassured the staff. He carefully began the procedure, working steadily while monitoring the mother’s vitals. His heart raced, yet his hands were steady, every motion calculated and precise.
After what felt like hours, a faint cry echoed through the room. The entire team released a collective breath as the newborn was carefully taken to the NICU. The mother, though bruised and with a minor fracture, was also stable.
Taehyung let out a long, relieved sigh, gratitude flooding him. He stood there for a moment, allowing the weight of the moment to settle, before cleaning up and going to check on the baby in the NICU.
Jungkook, the chief pediatric doctor, was already there, examining the tiny newborn. He looked up as Taehyung approached, giving him a reassuring nod.
“The baby is stable,” Jungkook said, checking the vitals one last time. “It’ll need to stay in the hospital for a few months since it was born prematurely, but it’s out of immediate danger.”
Taehyung felt a wave of relief wash over him, his shoulders relaxing as he looked down at the newborn, so fragile yet resilient. “Thank you, Jungkook.”
They exchanged a few more words about the baby’s condition, their professional composure still intact. But as they spoke, Jungkook glanced over at Taehyung, his usually reserved expression softening.
“Want to grab a quick drink from the café?” Jungkook offered, surprising himself as much as Taehyung.
Taehyung’s eyes lit up, and he nodded, trying not to let his excitement show too much. “Sure. That sounds good.”
---
At the café, Jungkook ordered a hot chocolate for Taehyung and a latte for himself. They found a quiet corner table, and as they settled in, Taehyung took a slow sip, savoring the warmth.
“So, how’s your day been?” Taehyung asked, his gaze soft but curious. He genuinely wanted to hear about Jungkook’s day, not just as a colleague but as a friend.
Jungkook took a sip of his latte, glancing at Taehyung thoughtfully. “It’s been… eventful. I had a couple of surgeries in the morning, and then the NICU rounds. Nothing as dramatic as your case, though.”
Taehyung chuckled. “It was intense, but I’m just glad both mom and baby are okay. This job really has its highs and lows.”
Jungkook nodded, feeling unexpectedly at ease. Usually, he kept a bit of distance, but with Taehyung, it felt natural. “I know what you mean. Sometimes I think about how strange it is — dealing with life and death every day. You’d think it would harden us, but… I don’t know. It’s different when you have people you trust around you.”
Taehyung’s eyes softened as he listened. “It is. And I think you’re doing a great job, by the way,” he said with a warm smile, which Jungkook found himself returning.
They fell into a comfortable silence, sipping their drinks. Taehyung suddenly grinned, breaking the quiet. “You know, I used to think of you as this cold, mysterious guy — all work, no play.”
Jungkook raised an eyebrow, smirking slightly. “Oh? And what do you think now?”
“Now?” Taehyung leaned closer, his voice a soft whisper. “Now, I think there’s more warmth there than you let on. Prove me wrong.”
Jungkook chuckled, his eyes glinting with amusement. Without saying a word, he reached out and gently booped Taehyung’s nose with his finger, making Taehyung’s eyes widen in surprise before he broke into a delighted laugh.
Unbeknownst to them, two of their junior doctors, Lee Know and Hyunjin, were sitting at a nearby table, sipping milkshakes. Lee Know nudged Hyunjin, his eyes widening as he pointed subtly at their chief doctors.
Hyunjin’s jaw dropped, nearly spilling his milkshake. “Is that… Jungkook? Our Jungkook? Acting… cute?”
Lee Know stifled a laugh. “Shocking, isn’t it?”
Back at their table, Jungkook caught the amused look on Taehyung’s face and sighed, though he was secretly enjoying the banter. Taehyung finished his hot chocolate, setting down the cup with a satisfied smile.
“Thanks for the drink,” he said, standing up with a soft smile that lingered just a bit longer than necessary.
Jungkook nodded, standing up as well. “Anytime, Tae.”
As they left the café together, both unaware of their juniors’ stunned stares, Jungkook felt an unfamiliar warmth spreading through him, a rare, quiet sense of happiness. And as Taehyung walked beside him, chatting animatedly about the baby’s progress, Jungkook couldn’t help but think that maybe, just maybe, he wouldn’t mind these quiet moments becoming a regular part of his life.
