True Nature

Now that I was awake enough to function I tried figuring out why I hadn't seen Sam at all today. I thought to myself...maybe Sam is trying to avoid all of us. But why would he do that? Since, the group and I haven't seen him in such a long time wouldn't we try to talk to him at least once in a while?

I finished Spanish 1, so I headed to work. I worked in, what the school called, the business office. I often just did what workers usually do in an office job. I filed a stack of payroll then I opened a skein of printing paper and carefully put it in the printer.

I had just finished answering a phone call and writing down the message when my friend, Matt, came to talk with me. He was mostly there because he was bringing in money from a freshman fundraiser. I started counting the money to know for sure if the amount was correct. While I did that I talked to Matt about how things were going for him.

I had met Matt and the beginning of the year with the other new freshman. He and I became friends and we talked whenever we had time, but for the past couple of days I was so busy that I wasn't able to talk as much with him. What made it harder was that he didn't hang out with the group that I hung out with.

I finished counting the money and wrote down the number that I got. I then turned to Matt and asked him a serious question.

"Do you think I'm weird?"

He tried to contain his reaction because he knew if he did anything at that time he would hurt me. He took a deep breath and said...

"I think you're as normal as someone like you could be. It's just sometimes you space out and you don't tend to listen. It's normal if you were daydreaming, but I think you're case is a little different from that."

"So, you're saying that I am not quite like everyone else? You know, you're not the first person to say that."

"Well, it's you're true nature. You can't help it. It's just who you are."

"Thanks Matt, I needed some confirmation. Well you're all set, I'll talk to you next time you swing by."

"I'll see you later then."

I finished off work and I started walking home. I suddenly heard russling noises in the bushes next to the sidewalk. I decided to hurry home.

As I got into my house I got a text from Clara.

Hey gurl, I was wondering if Trevor has asked you out to prom yet? If so d8d he do it through a text or while you to were walking together?

Great, I knew that Clara was thinking this when she gave Trevor my phone number.

Why didn't you ask me this at school?

I didn't think you were in the mood. Especially after what happened at lunch.

Why do I keep stepping into that uncomfortable situation over and over again? I just shook my head.

Yeah, you are right on that one. (Sigh) Fine, Trevor didn't ask me to prom and I don't think he ever will.

Then what do you guys talk about when you're alone?

He mostly talks about stuff that either makes me mad or embarrassed.

Oh, do tell.

Nah, why would I need anymore embarrassment?

True. Oh well, I'll talk to you tomorrow. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Bye.

For years now Clara had always tried either setting me up or hoping that something would unfold between me and a guy. It was just her true nature.

I didn't have any homework today which was a total surprise because that almost never happens. I decided to play a little of Chris's game. I "borrowed" my brother's xbox so that I could play. I snuck into the living room and started up the game.

I had played for a couple of hours when it was time for dinner. My dad called me to come and I didn't come. I just wanted to finish one more level before...

*click*

"Hey! What was that for?"

"Dinner, NOW!" My dad growled.

Apparently I had been playing for 20 minutes longer than I should have. I slowly walked to the table and quietly sat down. I didn't feel like eating, I just wanted to go back to the game.

As soon as everyone finished up I rushed over to the TV and continued playing. I didn't pay much attention to the time because I was so engrossed by the game I just couldn't stop. This time when my family wanted me of they unplugged the TV.

"Go to bed," my mom easily

I couldn't go down that easily. I wanted to play. I planned on pretending on going to bed then go down stairs and continue playing. I almost tried sneaking the whole system up to my room, but that didn't go so well...

"Ouch! I stubbed my toe! Who's idea was it to put a wall right there?"

Apparently it's difficult to be sneaky when you're trying to move a gaming system from the bottom floor to the top one, quietly, in the dark.

I was giving up. I stopped what I was doing and thought to myself What are you doing Christine? You're sneaking around the house at 11 at night just so that you can play a stupid game. You don't even like that type of gameing. Go to bed!

I realized the true nature of the game. I don't know how, but someone had changed the coding of the game so that people would get addicted to it and want more. I couldn't give the game back to Chris, I would just have to get him a better game.

I slowly trudged up the stairs and went to sleep.
