But there she was, standing with a drink in hand, her signature look of confidence and effortless beauty shining through.
"Well, if it isn't the queen of R&B herself," I teased as I walked up to her. Solána, known professionally as SZA, grinned widely, her dark curls bouncing as she turned to face me.
"Don't flatter me, Tookie," she said, rolling her eyes playfully. "You know I'm just here for the snacks."
"Snacks and gossip?" I shot back with a raised eyebrow.
She laughed, her laugh a mix of smooth and melodic, like it was meant to be heard on a record. "Well, I did come for a little bit of both."
We exchanged a quick hug, and as I stepped back, I noticed the glint of mischief in her eyes. Solána was always the type to speak her mind, and she didn't hold back. "So, pregnant with triplets, huh?" she said, not even waiting for me to ask how she'd been. "I gotta get me some of that Samoan sperm then."
I blinked, trying not to choke on my drink. "Excuse me?" I asked, grinning at her audacity.
"You heard me," she said, nodding her head dramatically. "I'm trying to pop out a few little ones in 2025, get me a man, get me some Samoan genes. I mean, if you're gonna go for a big family, why not go all the way, right?"
I busted out laughing. Of course, she would say something like that. I knew Solána was never one to hold back her thoughts. "He got some brothers, cousins, hell even uncles I can set you up with," I said, giving her a wink.
Jonathan, who had been standing nearby talking to someone else, overheard us and made his way over, his laugh deep and contagious as he joined the conversation. "Just let me know, and I got you," he added, giving a mock-serious look.
We all burst into laughter, and Solána threw her head back, the sound of her laughter filling the space. "Set it up as soon as possible," she said, looking between Jonathan and me with a grin. "2025, I'm trying to be married and pregnant. Can't let those good Samoan sperm go to waste, right?"
"Of course not," I teased, giving Jonathan a sideways glance. He smiled, knowing exactly where this conversation was going. I wasn't exactly shy about our relationship—or our unconventional throuple arrangement.
Just as Solána was about to say something else, Trinity walked up to us, carrying a plate with some of the appetizers the party had laid out. I smiled and kissed her cheek when she handed it to me, feeling the warmth of her presence as Jonathan placed his arm around her shoulders in a familiar, easy gesture of affection.
"Awe, you three are so cute," Solána said, eyeing the two of us with a playful look.
Trinity smiled, her hand resting gently on Jonathan's side. "Thank you," she said, her voice soft and genuine.
I looked over at Jonathan, and the happiness I felt with him and Trinity was undeniable. Being in a throuple had changed my life in ways I hadn't even expected. We had our challenges, sure, especially when it came to family, but for the most part, it was a dream.
The way Trinity and Jonathan just fit together with me made me feel like I finally found my place in this world. It wasn't always easy, especially when we had to deal with Jonathan's father, Solofa, who was never quite on board with our unconventional relationship.
Jonathan's dad was old-school, and he didn't exactly understand our dynamic. He always believed in traditional values, and to be honest, it was tough at first.
But Jonathan stood his ground, and when he went off on his dad, it was a turning point. Solofa had backed off after that, realizing that his son wasn't going to budge when it came to the people he loved.
I thought about that moment for a second, how Jonathan had defended us, his voice steady and unwavering. It meant a lot. Solofa didn't say much anymore, but I could see that he had at least come to respect us, even if he wasn't fully on board. And that was enough for me.
"So, Reeva told me you're doing your thing in the music world, huh?" I asked Solána, trying to change the subject to something less provocative.
"Oh, you know," she said, leaning in with a teasing grin. "Just trying to dominate the world, one album at a time. But honestly, with everything going on, I've been taking it slow. I'm enjoying the time off."
"I feel that," I said, nodding. "Sometimes I feel like I need to take a step back, just to breathe."
Jonathan gave me a sideways glance. "That's what you said after the last big project. You'll be back in the grind before we know it."
I laughed, knowing he was right. I couldn't ever stay away for too long. I thrived in the chaos. It was just the way I was wired.
"True," I said, shrugging. "But it's nice to just be home for a change, you know? Family time, taking things slow. There's something so peaceful about it."
"Exactly," Trinity agreed, smiling at me. She always had this calming aura around her. She was the grounding force between Jonathan and me, always keeping us balanced when things felt off.
We continued chatting for a while, and the atmosphere of the party was just what I needed—fun, laid-back, and full of people who got me. Solána and I talked more about her plans for 2025, and she shared some details about her new music, her upcoming projects, and everything she was looking forward to. I admired how focused and driven she was, even if her approach to life was a little unconventional at times.
As the night went on, more people filtered in and out of the party, including some of our close friends. It was one of those events that was just so full of life and energy that you didn't want to leave. The music, the laughter, and the easygoing vibes were exactly what I needed after a week of chaos.
"Hey, we're gonna grab some drinks, you want anything?" Jonathan asked, leaning down to kiss my cheek.
"I'll take a mock tail ," I replied with a grin. "Just make sure it's a good one."
"Of course. Anything for you," he said, winking as he walked away with Trinity. I couldn't help but feel a surge of affection watching them leave together. It was like watching a love story unfold right in front of me. The kind of love that wasn't just a fairytale but something that was lived and real, every single day.
Solána, still standing by my side, gave me a knowing look. "You're lucky," she said softly, the edge of mischief in her tone. "You've got your people. I think I'm starting to figure out how you make it work."
"I'm lucky, yeah," I said, smiling at the thought. "But it's not always easy, especially in a world where not everyone understands what we're doing. You know how it is, Sol."
She nodded, her eyes glinting with understanding. "I get it. But hey, as long as you're happy, who cares?"
"Exactly," I said, taking a deep breath and letting it out slowly. "Happiness is all that matters."
As the night wore on, I found myself surrounded by the people who mattered most. The conversations were light and carefree, and the laughter didn't stop. I was with my family—Jonathan, Trinity, my friends—and people like Solána, who had their own way of living outside the norms and expectations of society.
And in that moment, I realized how much I loved my life, my unconventional family, and the relationships that filled it with so much love, laughter, and understanding.
Maybe it wasn't traditional, but it was ours. And that was more than enough.
