The annoying summer humidity clung to everything, soaking the city in a, damp embrace even as the sun set, casting the streets in an orangeish yellow glow.
Melanie and Gus had slipped away from the crowd, each step carrying them farther into the corners of this dirty building.
Abandoned buildings, cracked sidewalks, and wild, graffiti-covered walls marked the path they followed throughout the place, leading them to areas they wouldn't dare to wander alone.
Here, right now, it was just the two of them. together but apart, both trying to outrun the complications of their own lives.
Melanie and Gus had been close for as long as they could remember, their friendship having grown into something unspoken—an easy, constant pull between them that no one else noticed. It wasn't that they didn't want to be together; it was just that neither of them was brave enough to cross that line.
Melanie was tangled in a relationship with someone she'd been with for years- comfortable, safe, but suffocating. Gus, on the other hand, was tangled in something too complicated to name, but he was just as stuck. Neither of them wanted to hurt the other, so they kept pretending. It was easier that way.
"You sure you know where we're going?" Gus asked, his voice laced with that teasing tone that made her roll her eyes.
"Should've brought a flashlight," he added, dramatically squinting into the dim lit abandoned warehouse. He smirked at her.
"its not that dark in here, scary," Melanie shot back with a smile, nudging him in the arm. Her smile lingering just a second longer.
