CHAPTER 31: CAUGHT

"Are you sure it's okay for them to hunt now? We could just get food from my space," Amelia said, glancing toward the door where Muir and Winston were leaving.

It was almost night. Both of her suitors had volunteered to hunt for dinner, but Amelia had planned to use ingredients from her space. She wanted to celebrate their first night in their new home. Curtis, however, pulled her toward the living room to sit on the wooden sofa.

"We can't just rely on your space, Mia. They're both working hard for you. Don't worry about them," Curtis said, lying his head on her lap.

She gently brushed his long, shiny red hair and smiled. "For you to trust them, you must like them now." She chuckled after saying that. He was right, though-despite everything being available in her space, they still had to face reality and work hard.

"When did I say I like them? Both of them are annoying," Curtis muttered, frowning as he denied it, though it was clear he didn't mean it.

"Really? Then they must be working hard every time they spar with you each night," she teased, making him pause, caught off guard.

She smiled sweetly, though there was an edge to it. "My snake must be hiding something from me. He sneaks out every night to meet with others instead of sleeping with me."

"T-that's... it sounds wrong..." Curtis stammered, his frown deepening at what she said. It made it sound like he was cheating on her. Even if he became a female, he would still choose to remain unmated rather than mate with those two.

Amelia smirked. "Really? Am I wrong?" she asked, teasing him.

He gulped nervously. "No, it's not like that. My female will never be wrong." He scrambled to sit up. Telling her she was wrong would have been a grave mistake.

She raised an eyebrow and crossed her arms over her stomach. "Then can my snake explain more so I can understand?"

Curtis sighed and began explaining. "I didn't want to hide this from you. I planned to tell you when the time was right. I know you'd worry if you knew. We've been sparring for almost two weeks now. I just want them to prove their loyalty and dedication to you before you accept them. Even though males in this world are different, there are some beastmen who could hurt you or pose a danger, disguising themselves to get your acceptance."

He was genuinely worried about her meeting dangerous beastmen. Though he wouldn't let anything happen to her, he couldn't always be by her side, especially in winter. He needed someone who would die to protect her. His little female was all he had, and he didn't know what he'd do if anything happened to her.

"I understand," Amelia said. She smiled, relieved that Curtis was being honest with her. "But, Curtis, I don't want us to hide things from each other. You're my mate, and I'm yours. We should face things together. Secrets could cause misunderstandings."

Curtis nodded. "I know, Mia. It won't happen again. I'm sorry. I've been a bad beastman." His tone was apologetic, and she laughed at his childishness.

"Will you still keep sparring with them? Did the three of you get any serious injuries?" she asked, concerned. She knew how strong these beastmen were.

"Not really. Even if we get injured, it's normal for us. Beastmen need to be tough to survive and protect their females," Curtis replied seriously. It was a beastman's pride to be strong.
