Many kids have the privilege of growing up in a united and affluent family. It must be nice to have everything you want, whenever you want it. No limits, and most importantly, parents who are present and responsible.

Maddox and Robby always wished they had that chance. When the Keene twins were born, their father didn't even show up. Since that day, they've rarely seen him. Madelyn barely knows him; he's like a stranger to her.

Their mother isn't always around either. Despite her attempts to appear superior to Johnny, she falls short. Almost every night, she meets a new guy and comes back home drunk.

As you can see, money doesn't flow abundantly in the Keene household. They can't afford much and have always lived in small apartments. So small that Robby and Maddox have to share a room.

However, Maddox found a way to channel her anger through the one thing she loves most in the world: karate. One of her mom's boyfriends owned a dojo, so she got free lessons. Seeing her talent and strength, several dojos recruited her. But it was only in the summer of her 15th year that she was recruited by a dojo in South Korea for a summer internship at one of the best dojos.

She returned from this experience stronger and more determined than ever. Maddox is currently part of the Topanga dojo, where she received a scholarship.

Of course, her family situation doesn't help her social life. Robby and Maddox have always managed on their own, but not always in the best way. For example, to pay the rent when their mother forgot, they would steal a computer. This always caused problems later, like today, when they got caught with drugs. They're stuck in the principal's office. Ms. Jenkins has tried to reach their mother a million times, but she doesn't answer.

That's why she decides to contact their absent father. "Is this Mr. Lawrence?" she says as Robby and Maddox roll their eyes. "This is Carla Jenkins, the vice principal at North Hills High," she continues. "I have you listed as an emergency contact for Robby and Madelyn Keene," the principal clarifies. "I already called her. She's not picking up. We found them with Molly. It's an illegal drug, Mr. Lawrence."

Maddox couldn't even imagine what her father was saying. He probably doesn't even know what Molly is. Then Ms. Jenkins hands the phone to Robby. He takes it nonchalantly and stands up.

"What do you want?" he says in a harsh tone. "Like you're one to talk," Robby says, laughing. "Don't try to play dad now. You're a pathetic loser." Robby hands the phone back to the principal and sits down.

Ms. Jenkins sighed, clearly frustrated. "I think maybe I should keep trying their mother," she declared, but it was clear she didn't have much hope.
