"Yo, Robby, Maddox, what'd we get?" Trey asked, balancing on his skateboard.

"Fifteen-incher," Robby declared.

"And a wallet stuffed to the brim," Maddox added, pulling the wallet out of her pocket.

"Nice," Cruz exclaimed, taking both items. Robby took off the store's shirt and tossed it back to the guy he had borrowed it from.

"Thanks, Eddie. We'll get you your cut," he said with a wink.

A bit later, further away from the store, Robby was on the stolen laptop, communicating with potential buyers.

"I got three guys right now willing to pay 400, no questions asked," Robby said.

"Dude, have them each Venmo half, and then give it to whoever shows up first," Maddox suggested, making Cruz and Trey laugh in agreement.

"What about the other two?" Robby asked.

"Sucks for them," Cruz scoffed, starting to walk away. Maddox and Trey were already a bit ahead, not noticing Robby wasn't following. His sister turned around, followed by the others, and walked back towards him.

Robby was holding a karate recruitment flyer, looking less than thrilled about who was offering the classes.

"What, you looking to take karate with Maddox?" Trey joked as Maddox approached to see what Robby was holding.

"No," Robby replied. "It's our fucking dad. Come on, let's get out of here."

The four of them left the area, Robby letting the flyer fall to the dirty asphalt.

Maddox hated her father. In fact, she couldn't care less about him. Johnny was like a stranger, an unimportant person in her life. Even though Maddox knew that Johnny was trying to get closer to her and her brother.

a few weeks later

Maddox and all the other students from her dojo sat in a square around the mat. The All Valley Under 18 Karate Tournament was fast approaching, and Maddox's dojo was already a two-time champion.

Maddox had only competed in a tournament once. She had plenty of opportunities to compete more often, but she always refused. She didn't want to fight, thinking she wasn't ready or strong enough. Madelyn always struggled with this issue. Never believing she was good enough was her biggest challenge. She was literally the best student in her dojo but couldn't see it.
