CHAPTER ONE / THATS SO TRUE
── drugged on the first day of school
i should have known today would be a disaster. i mean, what part of undercover mission ever screams "smooth sailing"?
“tiny, stay low!” taylor’s voice crackled through the comms, sharp and urgent. his tone was always serious, but now it had an edge that made my pulse spike.
“yeah, yeah,” i muttered, rolling my eyes as i pressed myself against the cold metal wall. the warehouse reeked of motor oil and dust, the scent stinging my nose as i peeked around the corner. every shadow seemed to shift, making my heart race.
“we’re running out of time,” morwynna’s voice sliced through the chaos, calm but unforgiving.
“do you think i don’t know that?” i whispered back, eyes locking onto a guard pacing a few feet away. sweat trickled down my temple, itching, but i didn’t dare move.
“silena, stop talking to yourself and move,” kenji snapped. his voice was ice-cold, the kind of tone that could freeze you on the spot. charming as ever.
biting down on my retort, i sucked in a breath and dashed across the open floor. my footsteps were soft, barely a whisper, but my heartbeat thundered in my ears. the plan was simple: grab the intel, get out, don’t die.
so far, i was barely holding onto two out of three.
“contact at your six!” roamer’s voice barked in my ear. before i could fully process, the heavy thud of boots on concrete filled the space behind me.
i spun around, eyes wide as a guard lunged at me. instinct took over, and i ducked, twisting to the side just in time to avoid his outstretched arms.
just when i thought i was about to be tackled, a loud crash came from above. georgina dropped down from the rafters, landing on the guard’s chest with a practiced grace. the man collapsed with a groan, unconscious.
“you’re welcome,” georgina said, smirking down at me.
i glared at her. “i had that under control.” total lie.
“sure you did, princess,” she teased before vanishing back into the shadows, her dark curls bouncing as she moved.
“focus, everyone. this isn’t a game,” taylor reminded us, voice tense. right. as if anyone could forget.
THE BEGINNING. / SILENA
the thing about new starts is that they never feel like a choice. they’re more like being shoved off a cliff and praying you land in water.
“are you sure about this?” i asked for what felt like the millionth time, my voice wavering despite my attempt at sounding confident.
my mom, carmen ramirez, gave me a small smile, soft but with a hint of sadness. “mija, it’s for your own good.” her eyes darted to my dad, anthony castellan, who stood stiffly, running a hand through his salt-and-pepper hair.
“this place will keep you safe, silena,” he added, his voice steady and final. typical dad—always the firm one.
“yeah, right,” i muttered under my breath, fingers clenching the straps of my backpack until my knuckles turned white. safe felt like a fairytale; this academy felt like the villain’s lair.
“we’ll be back soon,” mom said, pressing a kiss to my forehead. her touch was warm, fleeting. i wanted to believe her.
i watched as they walked away, their figures growing smaller with each step until they vanished beyond the gates. the silence that followed was almost suffocating.
“here we go,” i whispered, more to myself than anyone else. the entrance loomed in front of me—glass, steel, and an unsettling kind of perfection. the hallway beyond was pristine and quiet, the kind of quiet that screamed danger.
i took a deep breath and stepped inside. every click of my shoes echoed like gunshots. i glanced around, trying to get my bearings, but everything looked the same: marble, columns, and an unnerving emptiness.
before i could take another step, a hand clamped over my mouth from behind. panic surged through me, sharp and blinding. my scream was trapped behind the rough palm, my heart hammering against my chest as i struggled.
gunshots shattered the silence. the sound ripped through the hallway, making me flinch. the grip on me slackened, and the man holding me fell to the floor, lifeless. i stumbled forward, gasping for air, and turned to run.
“not so fast,” a deep voice commanded. i barely had time to register the shadow looming over me before a strong arm wrapped around my waist, lifting me off my feet as if i weighed nothing.
i kicked and thrashed, but it was useless.“put me down!” i shouted, my voice echoing. adrenaline surged through me, mixing with fear.
the man holding me chuckled, the sound annoyingly calm. “i’m one of the good guys, trust me.”
“oh, yeah, because being kidnapped screams ‘good guy,’” i snapped, fighting harder.
before i could argue more, everything tilted. a strange numbness spread through my body, and the world around me darkened. drugged. great. just great.
i woke up to the rhythmic pounding in my head and a dull, metallic taste on my tongue. blinking slowly, i forced my vision to focus. the room was stark, filled with faces i didn’t recognize. some curious, some guarded.
a woman stepped forward, her black hair swept back into a severe bun and eyes that looked like they could slice through steel.
“i am iris garcia,” she said, her voice cold but composed. “welcome to THE academy, silena.”
my stomach dropped, realization washing over me like ice water. this wasn’t the end of my nightmare—it was just the beginning.
perfect.
just perfect.
