"First snow is magical," Minji explained, adjusting her camera settings as we walked through the gradually whitening streets of Seoul. "There's a belief that if you're with someone special during the first snow of the season, you'll stay together for a long time."
"Is that why Hyein has been obsessively checking the weather app for the past week?" I laughed, watching my breath cloud in the cold air.
"SPEAKING OF!" A familiar voice rang out behind us. "I TOLD YOU IT WOULD SNOW TODAY!"
We turned to find Hyein bouncing toward us, wrapped in so many layers she looked like a walking bundle of scarves. Haerin followed at a more reasonable pace, elegant even in her winter coat.
The first snow of Seoul was turning the city into something from a dream - soft flakes catching in Minji's hair, fairy lights starting to twinkle in the early dusk, and the usual urban noise muffled into something almost magical.
Click.
"Really?" I grinned at Minji. "Even with snow on your lens?"
"Especially with snow on my lens," she replied, not looking sorry at all. "You look like you belong in a winter postcard."
"QUICK!" Hyein suddenly exclaimed. "We need to get to Namsan Tower! That's the most romantic spot for first snow and-"
"Actually," Haerin interrupted softly, checking her phone, "Danielle's installation at the Christmas Market is opening early. She's been working on this light and architecture project for weeks."
"But the romance-"
"She's designed an interactive light tunnel," Haerin added.
"...TO THE MARKET!"
---
The Christmas Market was transformed by Danielle's vision. As an architecture student with a focus on interactive spaces, she'd turned the usual market layout into something magical. Light tunnels created paths between stalls, each one programmed to respond to movement with changing colors and patterns. The central plaza featured her crowning achievement - a modern interpretation of a traditional Korean pavilion, built from light and geometric shapes that seemed to float in the snow.
"This is incredible," I breathed, watching families explore the space with wonder. "How did you even think of this?"
Danielle smiled, adjusting one of her design tablets. She looked tired but proud in her oversized architecture department hoodie. "I wanted to blend Korean traditional architecture with modern light design. My professor said it was too ambitious for a winter project, but..." She gestured at the crowds enjoying her creation. "Sometimes ambitious is exactly right."
"It's AMAZING!" Hyein spun through one of the light tunnels, her movement creating cascades of color. "Like being inside a rainbow!"
"The geometric patterns are inspired by traditional roof designs," Haerin observed quietly, studying the floating pavilion. Her artist's eye always caught the subtle details.
"Speaking of traditional meets modern," Danielle pulled out her portfolio, flipping to some preliminary sketches. "I'm thinking of submitting this concept for that international architecture competition. The one in Singapore?"
"The one you said was too big to even consider?" Hanni asked, pausing her attempt to choreograph a dance in the responsive lights.
"Well," Danielle's smile turned slightly mischievous, "seeing Minji get that New York opportunity made me think... maybe it's time to shoot for bigger things."
Minji lowered her camera, eyes wide. "Really?"
"You inspired me," Danielle shrugged, but her expression was serious. "All those photos of spaces between moments... it got me thinking about how architecture can create spaces for memories to happen. Not just buildings, but experiences."
