“Hey, Alexandra, let’s hang around at the park later and people-watch,” Vanny suggested, breaking into a grin.

“Sure! I’m always down for some quality commentary,” Alexandra replied with a wink.

They strolled to the park, sharing stories and laughter, until Vanny’s eyes caught someone new. He was tall, athletic, with a confident air that made him stand out even among the bustling crowd. The whispers about him had already begun: the new transfer student, a star basketball player from a prestigious private school, and, to top it all, apparently loaded.

“Alex, don’t look now, but over there!” Vanny pointed with wide eyes. “That’s him.”

“Geez, Vanny, subtle much?” Alexandra said, half-laughing as she pulled Vanny’s hand down. “And yes, I’m enrolled, by the way,” she added, rolling her eyes. “Now stop staring—he’s looking right at us.”

Vanny’s face turned beet red. The stranger’s eyes met his, and to Vanny’s horror, a smirk tugged at the corner of the boy’s mouth. “Oh no, Alex, he saw me! Hide me!”

Alexandra burst into laughter. “You’re making it too obvious, V. He’s laughing now, and I’m laughing too. You’re as red as a tomato!”

When the first day of school finally came, Vanny felt a familiar knot of nerves settle in his stomach. He sat in the classroom, scanning the faces for Alexandra when the unmistakable voice of their new advisor cut through the chatter.

“Good morning, everyone. I’m Sir Jeff, and I’ll be your advisor this year. Let’s start with introductions.”

Before Vanny could brace himself, Mr. Jeff’s eyes landed on him. “Why don’t you start?”

“Crap,” he muttered under his breath. “Uh, hello everyone. My name is Vanny, I’m 17, and I hope we can all be friends.”

“Nice,” Sir. Jeff nodded. “Who’s next?”

A tall figure stood up. “I’ll go, sir,” said a confident voice. “Hello, I’m Dereck john, but you can call me DJ. I’m 17, an athlete, and a transfer student. I moved here to be closer to my parents who live nearby. Oh, and Vanny—I believe we met at the park yesterday, didn’t we?”

Vanny felt his heart lurch. “Uh, yes. I guess we did,” he managed to say, his voice barely steady.

DJ’s smile deepened, a glimmer of amusement in his eyes. “Glad to officially meet you. Hope we can be friends.”

Alexandra slid into her seat next to Vanny just in time, whispering, “Told you he’d remember.”

Vanny’s mind raced, trying to make sense of the day’s events. The way DJ’s eyes lingered, the warmth in his smile—it all left Vanny questioning what lay ahead. One thing was certain: this school year was going to be anything but ordinary.
