The cafeteria buzzed with the usual hum of voices as Maya and Aiden entered together. The aroma of fresh coffee and baked goods filled the air, mingling with laughter and chatter. Their group of friends was huddled around their usual table by the window, waving frantically as soon as they spotted Maya.

“Maya! Over here!” Tessa called out, practically bouncing in her seat. She was Maya’s roommate and closest confidant—bold, sarcastic, and always in the know. Beside her sat her boyfriend, Liam, a laid-back guy with a sharp wit that kept everyone on their toes. Across from them, Dante was quietly sketching in his notebook, occasionally brushing a strand of his dark hair away from his eyes.

“Hey, lovebirds!” Tessa teased as Maya and Aiden approached. “Took you long enough. Were you two off having a secret rooftop rendezvous again?”

Aiden’s ears turned crimson, but Maya smirked, used to Tessa’s relentless teasing. “If we were, you’d be the last to know,” she shot back, sliding into the seat beside Dante.

“You wound me, Maya,” Tessa said dramatically, clutching her chest.

Aiden, still blushing, settled into the seat next to Liam, who gave him a knowing grin. “Don’t let her get to you, man. She lives for this stuff.”

Dante looked up from his sketchbook, his eyes lingering on Maya for a moment before he smiled faintly. “How’s the rooftop muse treating you?” he asked softly.

“Pretty great, actually,” Maya replied. “Though it’s a little crowded these days.” She shot a playful look at Aiden, who shrugged sheepishly.

“Maybe I should come up there too,” Tessa mused. “We can make it a club. ‘The Rooftop Dreamers.’”

“Or you could just stay on solid ground like a normal person,” Liam quipped, earning a laugh from the group.

As they ate, the conversation drifted to the upcoming exhibition.

“I heard Professor McKay is judging,” Tessa said, twirling a strand of her fiery red hair. “You know what that means, right?”

“High expectations,” Liam groaned. “She’s brutal.”

“She’s not that bad,” Aiden said. “She just wants us to push ourselves.”

“Spoken like a true overachiever,” Tessa teased, making Maya chuckle.

“Speaking of pushing ourselves,” Maya interjected, “are you guys submitting anything?”

Liam shrugged. “Probably a digital piece. Something quick and easy.”

Tessa rolled her eyes. “You’re so lazy, it’s infuriating.”

“What about you, Dante?” Maya asked, turning to him.

Dante hesitated, his fingers fidgeting with the edge of his notebook. “I’m working on a series of sketches. They’re... personal.”

Maya nodded, sensing his reluctance to elaborate. She always admired Dante’s work—it was intricate and full of emotion, much like the artist himself.

“What about you?” he asked, his voice soft.

“I’m submitting a mixed-media piece,” Maya said. “It’s still in progress, but I’m hoping it’ll come together in time.”

“I’m sure it’ll be amazing,” Dante said, his gaze lingering on her for a moment too long before he looked away.

After lunch, the group decided to head to the park for a quick break. The crisp autumn air was invigorating, and the fallen leaves crunched beneath their feet as they strolled along the winding paths.

“So, Aiden,” Tessa began, falling into step beside him. “What’s it like being Maya’s new muse?”

Aiden looked flustered but managed a small smile. “It’s... inspiring, I guess?”

Tessa smirked. “Aw, you’re adorable. But seriously, you’re good for her. She’s been all smiles lately.”

Aiden’s blush deepened, but he didn’t respond, his eyes drifting to where Maya was walking ahead with Dante.

Maya and Dante were discussing his sketches, and she couldn’t help but be impressed by his talent. “You should show these at the exhibition,” she said, flipping through the pages of his notebook.

Dante shook his head. “They’re not good enough.”

“Are you kidding?” Maya said, stopping in her tracks. “These are incredible, Dante. You have to share them.”

Dante looked at her, his expression conflicted. “Maybe. If you’ll help me pick which ones to submit.”

“Deal,” Maya said, grinning.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the park, the group decided to call it a day. They parted ways with promises to meet up later to work on their projects.

On the way back to their building, Aiden and Maya walked side by side, the silence between them comfortable.

“You really believe in him, don’t you?” Aiden asked suddenly.

“Dante?” Maya said, glancing at him. “Of course. He’s insanely talented.”

Aiden nodded, his gaze thoughtful. “He’s lucky to have someone like you in his corner.”

Maya smiled. “And I’m lucky to have you.”

Aiden’s step faltered slightly, but he quickly recovered, a small smile playing on his lips. “I’ll hold you to that.”

As they reached the entrance to their building, Maya turned to him. “Thanks for today. I needed it.”

“Anytime,” Aiden said softly, his eyes meeting hers.

For a moment, the world seemed to still, the noise of the city fading into the background. Then, with a shy smile, Aiden stepped back. “Good night, Maya.”

“Good night, Aiden,” she replied, watching as he disappeared into the building.

Maya stood there for a moment longer, her heart feeling strangely full. Little did she know, the bonds they were forming would soon be tested in ways none of them could have imagined.
