Maya stood at the door of Aiden’s apartment, her hand resting lightly on the doorknob. The events of the last few days felt like a blur—overwhelming, intense, and at times, surreal. But now, in the quiet of the apartment, with Aiden beside her, things felt calm. It felt like they could finally breathe. Or so she thought.
She glanced at Aiden, who was standing by the kitchen counter, his back turned to her. He had been distant, quiet, since they left the hospital. The kiss from earlier had reignited the spark between them, but the weight of everything they'd been through still loomed over them. He had been more closed off than usual, his movements sharp, as though he were carrying something heavy.
“What’s on your mind?” Maya asked softly, stepping closer to him.
Aiden’s shoulders tensed, and he let out a long sigh. “Maya, there’s something I need to tell you.”
Her heart skipped a beat. The tone of his voice, the serious look in his eyes, made her stomach churn with uncertainty. They had been through so much already. Could there be more to uncover? She stepped closer, her hands reaching for his, searching for reassurance.
“What is it, Aiden?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. “You can tell me anything.”
He turned to face her, his eyes filled with a mixture of pain and guilt. “There’s something you don’t know about Dante and me. Something I should’ve told you earlier.” His voice faltered, but he continued, “Dante and I… we’re brothers. Stepbrothers.”
The words hung in the air between them like a thunderclap, too loud, too shocking. Maya’s mind reeled, struggling to process the revelation. Her body stiffened, and for a moment, she thought she had misheard him.
“What?” she asked, her voice trembling.
Aiden’s eyes were filled with the same vulnerability that had always been there, but now it was tinged with a deep sorrow, like he was carrying the weight of a secret too heavy to bear. “Dante is my stepbrother. His father married mine years ago. I didn’t want to tell you this because I thought it would make things worse. But now, after everything that’s happened… you deserve to know the truth.”
Maya felt a cold chill run down her spine. Her mind flashed back to all the moments with Dante—the way he had looked at her, the way he had manipulated their lives behind the scenes. She couldn’t believe it. How could he have been right under her nose this entire time, hiding his true connection to Aiden? It felt like the ground was slipping from beneath her feet.
“How… how could you not tell me?” she whispered, her voice cracking. “All this time, you knew, and you didn’t think it was important to share that with me?”
Aiden ran a hand through his hair, looking torn. “It wasn’t easy for me to accept either. Dante’s father was never around when we were growing up. I barely even saw him. But when they moved in together, everything changed. I didn’t know what to do. I tried to keep a distance from him, but that didn’t stop the tension from building between us. We never saw eye to eye on anything.”
Maya shook her head, trying to make sense of the situation. Dante, the boy she thought she knew, had been keeping this secret from her all along. But more than that, the connection between him and Aiden seemed to explain so much—the tension between them, the rivalry, the dark pull Dante seemed to have over their lives.
“You have to understand,” Aiden continued, his voice low and filled with regret. “When my dad got involved with Dante’s mother, everything changed. I couldn’t tell anyone—especially not you. I didn’t want you to think I was part of whatever mess he was creating.”
Maya felt a weight settle in her chest. Dante had been playing a dangerous game with them, hiding behind the facade of a friend, a protector, a confidant. The twisted way he had manipulated everything, how he had tried to control the narrative, it all made sense now. His obsession with her wasn’t just about her. It was about Aiden—about claiming something that wasn’t his to take.
The silence stretched between them, heavy and suffocating. Maya tried to process it all, but she couldn’t shake the feeling of betrayal. Dante’s motives were far darker than she could have ever imagined.
“But why would he do this?” Maya finally asked, her voice shaky. “Why would he hurt you, Aiden? Why would he hurt me? We were never a threat to him.”
Aiden’s face twisted in pain. “Because I was always his competition. He could never accept me, never accept my place in this family. He hated that my dad cared for me, that I was the one he was always proud of. And when you came into the picture, Maya… it was like I was everything he wanted to take from me. He saw you as another thing to claim.”
Maya’s heart sank. She thought she had known everything about Dante, or at least enough to trust him. But this—this was a betrayal of an entirely different magnitude. She glanced up at Aiden, seeing the hurt and the uncertainty in his eyes, and something inside her softened. This wasn’t his fault. He had kept this secret for so long to protect her, to protect their bond. She wasn’t sure if she could forgive Dante, but Aiden was different.
“I’m so sorry,” Maya whispered, stepping closer to Aiden. “I didn’t know. I didn’t understand.”
Aiden shook his head, taking her hands in his. “It’s not your fault, Maya. None of this was your fault. And I never wanted you to be caught up in it.”
She took a deep breath, steadying herself. The pieces of the puzzle were falling into place, but it was hard to reconcile the man she thought she knew with the monster Dante had become.
“Dante is dangerous,” she said, her voice hardening. “He doesn’t care about anyone but himself.”
Aiden nodded. “I know. And I’m sorry you got dragged into it. I never wanted to put you in harm’s way.”
Maya squeezed his hands, her gaze softening. “We’ll deal with him, Aiden. Together. Whatever it takes.”
Aiden’s eyes searched hers, the storm in his gaze calming as he realized how much she meant it. He leaned forward, resting his forehead against hers, their hearts beating in sync. In that moment, the world outside seemed to fade away.
“We’ll end this. I promise,” he murmured, his voice thick with emotion.
Maya nodded, feeling the weight of his words settle into her soul. No matter what secrets had been buried, no matter what had been hidden in the dark, they would face it together. And together, they would fight for their future.
