Chapter 7:

The day is uneventful until Lucy gets a call over the radio. A welfare check request has come in—a concerned neighbor reported hearing unusual sounds from a nearby house. The address is just outside her current patrol zone, but she's closest.

Dispatch:
"Unit 7-Adam-15, respond to a possible welfare check at 1843 Grover Avenue."

Lucy Chen: (into the radio)
"Copy that, 7-Adam-15 en route."

The house is an older, single-story structure on a quiet street. Lucy parks a short distance away and approaches cautiously, scanning the surroundings. The front door is ajar, a faint creak as the wind moves it slightly.

Lucy Chen: (to herself)
"Always the creepy ones."

Hand on her holstered weapon, she steps inside. The house is dark and eerily silent. Something doesn't feel right. As she moves further in, she notices signs of a struggle—overturned furniture, a broken lamp, and scattered papers. Her instincts scream at her to leave, but she pushes forward, calling out.

Lucy Chen:
"LAPD! Anyone here?"

There's no response. Suddenly, the door slams shut behind her, and a voice she hoped she'd never hear again cuts through the silence.

Elijah Stone: (mocking)
"Officer Chen. Long time no see."

Lucy spins around, drawing her weapon, but she's quickly overpowered by two of Elijah's men who grab her from behind. Her radio is knocked to the floor, and she's disarmed before she can react. Elijah steps into view, his smile cold and calculating.

Elijah Stone:
"You didn't think I'd forget about you, did you? A whole year in prison thanks to you. I've been waiting for this moment."

Lucy Chen: (gritting her teeth)
"If you're looking for revenge, you're wasting your time. You'll end up right back in a cell."

Elijah Stone: (leaning in)
"Maybe. But not before I make you pay."

Chapter 8: Suspicion

Back at the station, the bullpen is buzzing as officers wrap up their shifts. John Nolan, Nyla Harper, Angela Lopez, Tim Bradford, and the others gather near the lockers, discussing plans to hit a bar later that evening.

Nyla Harper:
"So, who's picking the spot? Because last time Nolan chose, the food was... questionable."

John Nolan: (defensively)
"It wasn't that bad!"

Celina Juarez: (laughing)
"Yeah, if you like microwaved quesadillas."

Tim Bradford: (interrupting)
"Where's Chen? She's usually here by now."

Aaron Thorsen: (shrugging)
"Didn't she say something about babysitting her niece tonight?"

Angela Lopez: (nodding)
"Yeah, she mentioned it before roll call. She probably ducked out early."

Wesley Evers:
"Still, wouldn't hurt to check in. Just to be sure."

Tim Bradford: (pulling out his phone)
"I'll call her."

He dials, but it goes straight to voicemail. Frowning, he tries again, with the same result.

Tim Bradford:
"She's not picking up."

Angela Lopez:
"Relax. She's probably just busy with the kid."

Tim reluctantly nods, but a nagging feeling keeps him on edge. He puts his phone away, trying to shake the unease.

Chapter 9: A Night of Uncertainty

After finishing their shifts, the officers of Mid-Wilshire gather at a local bar as planned. The mood is light, filled with laughter and camaraderie as they unwind from the day's work.

John Nolan: (to Nyla)
"So, Harper, are you finally going to admit my suggestion wasn't terrible? This place has great sliders."

Nyla Harper: (raising an eyebrow)
"They're passable. Let's not go overboard with the praise."

Angela Lopez: (teasing)
"That's Nyla's way of saying she likes them, Nolan. Don't push your luck."

Tim Bradford: (glancing at his phone)
"Still no word from Chen?"

Aaron Thorsen:
"She probably got caught up babysitting. She'll be fine."

Jackson West:
"Yeah, Lucy's got this whole balance thing down. Probably just needed the night off."

Tim nods, though unease still lingers in his expression. The night continues, and the group eventually parts ways, unaware of the events unfolding far from their cheerful gathering.
