After things quieted down in the dorm buildings, I opened my door quietly. I checked down the hallway, seeing the lights in the office on. I wondered who was on duty tonight. If it was a certain teacher, we could get away easily and he would even help us out if we got caught outside. If it was another who's monitored my floor before, we weren't getting out of here unless there was a mattress on the ground and we were trained stunts people. I tiptoed down the hall towards the office. I peered up and looked into the window. Mr. Gossler was sitting at the desk, fiddling with the pens. I knock on the window. He looks up and sees me and waves me in. "You know you're supposed to be asleep right?"
"When does my room ever sleep," I ask him honestly.
"That's very true." He puts the pens back in the bucket on the desk and then looks back at me again. He eyes me for a moment, and then rolls his eyes and sighs. "I'm going to regret asking this, but what do you want?"
"Why can't I just come down here to see you?" He stares at me. He's not convinced. "All right I'm caught. We wanted to sneak over a couple of the guys to have a movie night before the assembly. One last hoorah before we won't see each other again. I think you can understand that."
"Yes, but I can't allow it." I pout. "I've already bailed you four out twice for having guys over. I'm not going to jeopardize my job anymore than I possibly have for you girls."
"Please. Tomorrow is kind of stressful for me. I find out my class tomorrow, which means I find out something about my past. Plus I'm going to lose the only people I've ever allowed myself to get close to." I was seriously putting on the guilt trip. I had to; I wanted this so much. "Please?"
He tries to look away from me. Mr. Gossler, more than most teachers, knew a lot about me. Maybe it was because he used to run detention and I was a bit of a trouble maker when I was a child. He would talk to me about anything and everything. I told him more than I told my parents. I could trust him; he'd been in the same boat I was with his parents. He was adopted at age three after his mother was killed in a mission and his father died when his plane malfunctioned. His mother was a hunter and his father was a flyer. He got stuck with Teacher. If you ask me, he's better suited to be a Hunter than a Teacher. He doesn't mind his job though. He thinks he can relate to his students better than most. Maybe because he's 25 and most teachers in the school are in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and even 60s.
He looks at me, rolls his eyes, and drops his head. "If I lose my job because of you, I'm coming after you."
I smile and run back to my dorm. I tell the girls the movie night's on. When I walk back out to the office, Mr. Gossler is on the phone talking to the teacher looking after the boys' dorms. He already knew which dorm it was; he's made the call before. He looks back at me. I smile at him. "The lounge door remains locked, television gets muted when you hear any footsteps, your dorm gets locked, and when the movie's over, I'll make sure I'm the one who catches them walking back. Now if you excuse me, I'll go to the door."
I go back to my room. Taylor grabs the popcorn from her dresser, Riley grabs the movie from under her pillow, and Cleo grabs the beverage, pink lemonade, from her bag. When we hear the door open to the stairs, we walk out and meet them half way. Mr. Gossler walks over to the lounge and quietly unlocks the door. He turns on the lights and looks at us. "Please keep it quiet. I don't need to get into trouble for you guys." He specifically looks at me. More than my group of friends, he's bailed me out even more. I owe him.
Once he leaves, we all look at each other. Cameron, Jake, Ashton, and someone we weren't familiar with. RIley speaks up first. She already has the movie in. "Who's ready for some blood shed, some decapitation, and screams," she asks.
The guys lighten up and walk over to sit down. I sit on the couch. Riley and Ashton sit next to each other on the floor, Cleo sits with Jake, even Taylor sits with Cameron. As the movie begins to play, the unknown guy takes a seat next to me. "Seems were the only two who aren't paired up."
"Guess so." I look over at him. "I'm Ava."
"Ronan."
"Nice to meet you." I smile at him. He smiles back. He scoots closer to me. We barely pay attention to the rest of the movie.
