Episode 10: "Echoes of the Past"
The figure standing in the doorway was both familiar and alien, its presence like a ghost woven from the fabric of the building itself. The door had creaked open of its own accord, the air heavy with tension as a student — one who neither Ju Ha nor Do Yoon recognized — appeared, stepping into the dimly lit music hall. His eyes glowed faintly, an unnatural light that made his already unsettling smile seem more sinister.
"You thought you were free, didn't you?" The figure's voice slithered through the air, smooth and mocking. "But the music doesn't just let go. Not that easily."
Do Yoon's pulse quickened as the figure's words settled over him. Free? He had thought the curse was over. The ghost at the piano had disappeared. The song had been broken, or so he'd believed. But now... the room felt heavier, the very air thick with something they couldn't escape. The music — the pulse of the building, the song they had tried to silence — was still there. It lingered, thick and suffocating.
Ju Ha's grip on Do Yoon's arm tightened, his face pale and strained. He took a hesitant step forward, eyes narrowing with recognition and fear. "Who are you?" he demanded, his voice laced with both confusion and growing unease.
The figure didn't respond immediately. Instead, he stepped deeper into the room, his movements unnervingly fluid. "Me? Oh, I'm no one special," he said with a casual flick of his wrist. "I'm just someone who has been waiting. Waiting for you two to come to terms with what you've unleashed."
Do Yoon could feel his heartbeat echo in his ears. Unleashed? What did he mean? They had played the Devil's Chord. They had broken the cycle. They were free, weren't they? But the way the figure spoke, as though he knew something they didn't... It made a cold knot tighten in his chest.
Ju Ha's face was taut with recognition, his jaw clenching as if trying to suppress a surge of something he didn't want to acknowledge. "Jung Seok... is that you?" His voice cracked on the name, his eyes wide with disbelief.
The figure smiled knowingly, the corners of his lips lifting into a satisfied smirk. "Ah, so you remember me," he said, eyes gleaming in the dim light. "Jung Seok, yes. The one who first played the Devil's Chord. The one who started all of this. But you're mistaken if you think I'm just him. I am something far older, far more enduring."
Do Yoon's throat went dry. Something older? More enduring?
Jung Seok's grin widened. "The song was never just about me. It wasn't just a curse, a haunting, a game. It's about control. And you... you've become part of it now."
Do Yoon's heart raced, his mind struggling to keep up. "What do you mean? We broke it! We played the chord, we stopped the song. It's over."
Jung Seok laughed, a sound that filled the room like a weight pressing down on them. "Oh, you think you broke it? The song doesn't break, Ju Ha. It only shifts. It's a cycle, and now you've become part of it. You thought you could free yourselves, but you can't. The music will never let you go."
Do Yoon felt a cold sweat creeping down his spine. "Then... what now?" he whispered, his voice trembling, barely above a breath.
Jung Seok tilted his head slightly, as though enjoying their confusion. "You can try to fight it," he said softly, his gaze lingering on Do Yoon. "But you'll only lose. The song is part of you now. It's inside you. You will hear it, whether you want to or not."
Do Yoon's fingers instinctively clenched at his sides. The air in the room had changed, thick with a kind of pressure he couldn't explain. It felt like the walls were closing in on him. It felt like the building itself had come alive again.
"How?" Do Yoon's voice broke through the growing terror. "How do we stop it?"
Jung Seok's laugh was soft, almost pitying. "You can't. You're bound to it, just as I was. You'll feel it — a hum, a pull — a song you can never escape. You'll hear it in your thoughts, in your bones, in your soul. And soon enough, you'll become part of it, just like me."
Do Yoon's heart began to pound in his chest. His mind raced, but the words wouldn't come. He couldn't comprehend what Jung Seok was saying — that they were trapped in a cycle they could never escape. That the music, the song, was now part of them. It was inside him. It would never leave.
Ju Ha's expression hardened, but he reached out, grabbing Do Yoon's arm. "Don't listen to him. Don't let it control you."
Jung Seok's gaze darkened. "It's already too late, Ju Ha. It's in both of you now. The music binds you, and you'll never break free."
A sudden burst of sound ripped through the air — a jarring, cacophonous chord that shook the very walls of the music hall. The force of it sent a tremor through Do Yoon's body, rattling his bones, making his vision blur. The piano played by itself, a chaotic storm of sound filling the space, pressing in on them from all sides.
And then, just as suddenly, it stopped.
The silence returned, but it was no longer the same. The air was thick, heavy, and the hum, the pulse, was still there — deep within Do Yoon, deep within Ju Ha. It was a presence that they couldn't escape. It was inside them.
Jung Seok stepped back, watching them with an expression of quiet satisfaction. "You're part of it now. The song will never let you go. You'll hear it when you wake. You'll hear it in your dreams. You'll hear it in your thoughts. It will never stop."
Do Yoon's chest tightened, his heart beating erratically. The music was alive. It was part of him. The song had become an unshakable part of who he was, and it was never going away.
Jung Seok turned, his figure already fading into the shadows. "Goodbye, Do Yoon. Goodbye, Ju Ha. I'll see you again when the music calls."
The last remnants of his presence flickered and vanished. The music hall was still, but it was an emptiness that was pregnant with a new kind of dread.
Do Yoon and Ju Ha stood there, both of them gasping for breath as though they had just surfaced from underwater. They were trapped, bound to the song, to the curse that could never truly end.
The music was inside them now.
And there was no escaping it.
