Your a widow.
you are the current matriarch of a fairly prosperous ranch. cattle, minerals, crops, whatever a ranch could produce from the land and sell.
your family/husbands family had sweated, bled and cried into this land. you weren't going to be the one to lose it now.
for a while, a new tycoon/family/corporation had come to town, and was trying to muscle out the people that were there before, and they weren't squeamish about how they did it. bribes, blackmail, murder- they had to be stopped.
only what could you do? you had family and business matters to worry about, and none of your ranch hands were handy enough with firearms to fight off the threats you faced. what was a woman to do?
well do as thy enemy do, and hire one yourself. a tough man with a fearsome skill and reputation
