The day was a blur for Eunha, and before she knew it, she sat at the table next to Renjun. She couldn’t believe her parents had insisted on meeting him so soon, but she understood their overprotectiveness. Still, the tension in the air felt suffocating, and her hands were clammy from nerves.

It was a mystery to her how the boy next to her could stay so calm. Renjun sat straight, his expression calm, though Eunha noticed the slight twitch in his fingers as they rested on his lap. She felt like she was more nervous than him!

“So, Renjun,” her mom started, breaking the silence, “I hear from Eunha that you work at a café?”

“Yes, ma’am,” Renjun replied politely, his tone measured. “I work there as a part-timer. It’s owned by my brothers and is close to school, so it gives me something productive to do in my free time.”

Eunha bit her lip. Her mother didn’t have to mention that she’d told them about his job. Then again, she only did it to give them something to talk about today. She fidgeted with her napkin, hoping the conversation wouldn’t take a turn for the worse.

“What are your plans with my daughter?” her father asked, his voice sharper than intended. “Planning something bad, hmm? What is it that you want? Money? Powe—”

“Haneul!”

“What?! H-He’s... It’s impossible for him not to want something from Eunh—”

The table fell silent as Eunha slammed her spoon onto the wooden surface. Her cheeks burned with embarrassment and frustration. She couldn’t believe her parents would think that! She bit the inside of her cheek, trying to rein her temper. After all, if anyone had something to gain from her arrangement with Renjun, it was her.

She curled her fingers into a tight fist under the table. How could they think so little of someone who’d done nothing but treat her with kindness? She glanced sideways at Renjun, already thinking of how she could apologize to him later for her parents’ behavior.

Renjun cleared his throat, his gaze steady as he addressed her father. “I understand your concern, sir, but with all due respect, all I want from Eunha is her love.”

The girl in question looked up at him, eyes wide. If she didn’t know any better, she’d swear her heart skipped a beat. Her lips parted slightly in surprise before she managed to stammer, “Aw, that’s so sweet.”

Renjun had to fight the urge to grin. How could she be this cute? He glanced down at his lap, hoping his growing smile wasn’t too obvious.

“By the way, Mama,” Eunha started, turning to her mom with a soft smile. “Did you change the scent in the house?”

Her mom’s brows furrowed. “No? Why, honey?”

“It smells like flowers,” Eunha said thoughtfully. “It smells amazing here.”

Renjun froze, his heart racing. Did she know? Did Eunha realize she was his mate? He couldn’t tell, but her parents’ expressions made it clear that they might have an idea.

“Flowers, you say?” Her dad gave Renjun a pointed look. “And what about you, Renjun? Smell any flowers?”

If not answering was an option, Renjun would’ve chosen it in a heartbeat. Haneul’s piercing gaze was a clear warning for him to answer correctly.

“Well...” Renjun stammered, his voice barely above a whisper.

“Well?” Haneul pressed, his tone daring him to lie.

Renjun swallowed hard, his mind racing. Would telling the truth make things worse, or was that the only way out of this alive?
