Chapter 2
Luke
Police cars and an ambulance arrived after twenty minutes of anxious waiting. Paramedics came towards Calum and I with a massive bag, probably containing first aid stuff. "Hi boys, can I get some names and ages?" the woman in her thirties asked in a soft, soothing tone. She bent down and put a hand on my back.
"I-I'm Luke. Hemmings – and I'm 18. And this... is... C-Calum Hood... who is 19." I said almost silently, shivering like mad. She rubbed my back with a strong hand.
"It's all right darl, you don't need to be scared. We're going to take Calum to the hospital where we'll make him better. Can you let us know what happened, and any known illnesses/conditions?" she asked, whilst taking our pulses and checking the area with a torch. Then she called over her team.
Her colleague, a guy of a similar age, lifted Calum onto a board and with another paramedic, carried him into the ambulance. I watched as his lifeless body rolled about on the board. More tears fell. "Calum's fine, he's a healthy boy with strong muscular legs – but basically w-we were walking on the road, I knew it was a terrible idea, but it was really late and we'd had a bit of alcohol, and there were no cars... then suddenly this massive truck came zooming down the road and forced us onto the ground. I tried to save him, I really did! I promised myself that I wouldn't let him get hurt but he still did and what if he dies? Oh god what'll happen to our band... please doctor, please say you can help him?!" I beseeched, grabbing her shoulders with force.
"I'm no doctor, but he'll be okay. He's just lost consciousness. He's not dead. His pulse is still there. Come on, why don't we go into the ambulance and join him?"
I nodded ferociously but remembered Michael and Ashton. "W-what about the other two?"
She helped me up and brushed off dirt from my clothes. "Another ambulance is coming. They'll take care of them. Once we get to the hospital though, some police officers will want to speak to you, if that's okay?"
I ignored her and ran inside the ambulance where Calum laid. The guy from earlier was wrapping bandages around his head and he was already connected to a heart monitor. The woman was right, his heart was still beating. He was alive, thank god. The woman closed the ambulance doors and jumped into the driver's seat, and without turning on the siren, drove to the nearest hospital.
The whole way, I was all jittery and jerky. The only thing running through my mind was 'what if Calum dies?' - I couldn't bear the thought of living without him. He'd literally just told me that he liked me. And then he lost consciousness – I mean what the fuck was he doing to me?
"Luke dear, we're here."
My eyes shot open and they searched the area. I was still in the ambulance but Calum was gone. "Where's Calum?!" I shouted tiredly. Dammit, we shouldn't have played so much FIFA; hell, we shouldn't have even thought about drinking alcohol, not with the low tolerance levels present in my sad, sad band.
"Don't worry about him darl, he's inside getting treatment; come on in, I'll get you a cup of tea. Your other two friends have also arrived."
I shivered as she led me out of the ambulance and into the hospital. I'd never really been inside a hospital ER before, so this was a new experience. Despite the time of day, the seats were almost full of people with ailments, some very tired indeed. I quickly noticed Michael's black hair disappearing behind a curtain, and rushed over.
