Barron Trump sat on the central lawn of NYU's campus, surrounded by a diverse group of students talking, laughing, and debating topics ranging from trivial stuff to deep issues. Daniel was next to him, chewing on a slice of pizza he'd bought from a nearby food truck. In front of them, a group of classmates was engaged in a heated debate. It was the first time Barron had been part of something like this since he started at the university.
"So, here's the thing," a blonde girl with round glasses exclaimed, gesturing passionately. "The Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, and now we have states where abortion is practically impossible! We need to push for federal legalization!"
Her comment sparked a chorus of agreement from part of the group, while others, including Barron, stayed quiet, just listening.
"But what about states' rights to legislate on the issue?" countered a messy-haired guy holding an open laptop. "Shouldn't it be a local decision based on each state's values and culture?"
"Local?" the blonde shot back, visibly annoyed. "What about the women who live in those states? Don't they deserve the same rights as everyone else? This is absolutely unacceptable!"
Daniel nudged Barron, whispering, "You gonna jump in, or just watch the circus?"
Barron took a deep breath. He knew that anything he said could be blown out of proportion because of who he was, "the president's kid." But he also felt like he had something to say.
"I think," he started, calmly, "this is one of those issues where people get so caught up in their emotions that they forget to listen to each other."
All eyes turned to him. The air grew quiet for a moment before murmurs broke out.
"Got something to say, Little Trump?" a guy across the circle quipped, earning a few stifled laughs.
Barron ignored the jab, keeping his tone steady.
"I'm not my dad," he stated, looking directly at the heckler. "And I think for myself. But if you really want to know my opinion, I think abortion is more complicated than just 'legal' or 'illegal.'"
The blonde crossed her arms, skeptical. "Complicated how? Are you saying women shouldn't have the right to choose?"
"That's not what I said," Barron replied. "I'm just saying that instead of polarizing the issue, we should focus on what's really happening. Why do so many women feel like it's their only option? Wouldn't it be better to create conditions where they don't feel forced to make that choice?"
"That sounds like a conservative argument in disguise," she retorted, narrowing her eyes.
"It's not about being conservative or liberal," Barron responded, still calm. "It's about support—sex education, access to contraception, maternity assistance... those things matter. But at the same time, I think life has value, and that has to be part of the conversation too."
Silence fell again. Isabela, who had been quietly observing from a distance, felt compelled to step in. She moved closer and sat down next to a friend.
"That's a nice theory, Barron," she began, her voice soft but firm. "But while we're talking about ideal solutions, thousands of women are being forced to travel to other states or, worse, turn to dangerous, illegal methods. Do you really believe the answer is just 'support'?"
He looked at her, both surprised and impressed by her courage to challenge him.
"No, Isabela," he admitted honestly. "I don't think it's just support. But I also don't think the answer is to legalize it without limits. There's a balance, but nobody seems willing to find it."
