Prologue

Xavier's POV

I stalked the night, my coat as dark as the alleyway I walked on and the shadows created by the barely lit lamps allowed me to cling onto the darkness that embraced me. All the while my green eyes trained on the female figure running a few feet in front of me.

The woman herself was something to look at, and she knew it too from the clingy sweatpants she wore and the sports bra she had on that barely covered anything, but the dark blue shade of it set off her fake tan nicely. Her hair was like silk, the brunette tendrils, now unfortunately scraped up in that unforgiving messy bun, the exact colour of her large eyes.

She did not know I existed, and I had planned it that way. She did not know I was walking so calmly behind her as she jogged, like I always did ever since I saw her a week ago and identified her to be next on my list.

I knew everything about her. From her weight, to her job at a female perfume store. From the type of nail polish she wore on her dainty toe nails, to when she graduated high school (at 22, not long ago) and what grades she had.

Some people – well the people who were like me – would no doubt not want to attach themselves to their victims by doing this, and would much rather make it objective. But not me. I wanted to know who they were, wanted to see if it would matter to me when I saw their life leaving their body.

So far it hadn’t happened, but that just made me more determined to find out if it ever could.

I quickly sunk deeper into the shadows when I looked down at my watch and saw the time. Any minute now and she would have to stop to catch her breath.

Sure enough, her footfalls slowed while mine sped up to catch up to her. When she finally stopped, her chest heaving as she braced herself against her knees, I stopped too and tilted my head to the side, staring at the clear sight of her ass, her sweatpants nothing but complimentary to the tight round globes.

But even that barely got a little admiration out of me.

I was now directly behind her, and from her suddenly stiffened form and her shallower breaths, I knew that she knew I was there. But then, she would have been rather stupid if she hadn’t, seeing as even I could see the glint of my perfectly polished shoes.

I didn’t say anything when she slowly straightened up, my eyes on her neck where I could perfectly see the delicate hairs on them standing up and I knew it wasn’t from the cold.

She turned around and I saw her face seem to relax when she saw the smirk on my own that a lot of my victims sometimes thought to be reassuring. It was probably because the lack of light didn’t allow them to see the icy depths within my irises. But she soon would, and by then whatever warning sign that rung into her instincts wouldn’t be able to save her.

“Gosh, you scared me,” She giggled, her hand coming up to tuck a strand of her hair behind her ear, her large eyes, that reminded me of a doe’s, looking up at me with the purpose to flirt, making my smirk widen.

I had learned that a handsome face always calmed everyone down and that if it came to a woman picking someone to help her just from judging a man in a few seconds, they would pick the handsome man with the unknown cruel intentions, over the ugly guy with the unknown intentions of a saint.

“My apologies ma’am. That was the last thing on my mind.” I assured, taking a step forward so she would take one back, and continued to do so until her back nearly hit the wall of a nearby building.

Only then when our bodies were completely covered in the shadows, did I drop my smirk and once she saw my blank expression she finally realised what danger she was in because, like with all my vanity-ridden victims, she had thought I was making a move on her.

“Hey, what–” She started to say, her voice incredibly high-pitched in her panic and I almost flinched at the sound of it, before I put my gloved hand to her mouth and effectively blocked her only way to talk.

“You should have stayed home today like your husband told you to,” I whispered, and her eyes widened even further when she realised I had been following her.

When I had first started this…pastime…of mine, I had used to feel elated at their fear when I revealed my stalking, but now…

Now it was as tedious as the rest of my life.

“Don’t take it personally my love,” I continued to whisper reassuringly as I got out a clear bag from my pocket, my choice of weapon for this evening. “But your vanity enabled yourself to catch my attention.”

Then with that I quickly wrapped the bag around her head and her neck, watching as her screams were swallowed by the plastic, her breath slightly clouding up the sight of her lovely face as she fought for air. I panted along with her, as if somehow I was getting her breath and it was soaking into me as it gushed out of her. I could feel my heart beat thump faster as hers slowed, my body heat turning up as hers went colder.

The irony of the situation never failed to get to me.

I was a living corpse while my victims were alive, breathing and walking around sure, but I never truly felt anything. But while my victims died under my hands, I felt truly alive, could actually feel my breath exit and enter my body, could feel the steady thumps of my heart beat as it flowed my blood around my body…

I didn’t want to live this way. Didn’t want to be this monster.

But though I knew what I was, I could stare at myself in the mirror without a feeling of remorse. Even now as I dropped the body of Olivia Howard, I didn’t feel any guilt.

Because to me, those minutes of feeling was worth it. Oh so worth it.
